Alternatives to the Inca Trail
Getting off the tourist trail en route to Machu Picchu
The Inca Trail is regularly featured in round-ups of the world's greatest treks, and for good reason: It's the only Peru trek that arrives directly to the gates of Machu Picchu, and the route is an important archeological monument in its own right.
But this popularity comes at a price: permits are limited and vastly oversubscribed, and its reliance on porters creates deeply problematic workers' rights concerns.
So what is a responsible traveller to do?
If you're set on the Inca Trail you can do your homework and find an operator who treats their porters with due care and respect, and then try to secure permits for your chosen dates (be prepared to book months in advance).
Or you can look further afield. There are several other Machu Picchu hikes beyond the blockbuster Inca Trail that are widely marketed as "Inca Trail alternatives." They all start in the Sacred Valley, and they're usually sold with a visit of Machu Picchu at the end.
It's important to note, though, that despite the tourism industry's best efforts to rewrite reality and sell these as alternative hikes “to” Machu Picchu, none of the most popular alternatives are technically treks to Machu Picchu. They all finish somewhere near the ruins, followed by a transfer to Aguas Calientes where you'll visit the ruins via train and bus with all the other day-trippers. The Inca Trail (either the full four day trek or the KM104 version) is the only trek that actually arrives at Machu Picchu by foot.
My personal tip is to combine the Lares Trek with the KM104 ('two day' Inca Trail trek). You finish the Lares trek with a soak at the Lares hot springs, followed by a relaxing night in Ollantaytambo. You then join the KM104 trek to hike the final day of the Inca Trail. You arrive at Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate, called Inti Punku in Quechua. This gives you the best of both worlds: Andean trekking experience, with the climatic ending at Machu Picchu.
So look beyond the Inca Trail – all of the following Inca Trail alternatives are worth your consideration.
