Detailed itinerary

What you'll see and do

Dushanbe to Kalai Khumb (370 km, 8–9 hrs)

We begin our journey towards the Pamirs, crossing the mountain pass to Kalai Khumb, the halfway point to Khorog. We travel via the southern route through Kulyab.

Along the way, there will be several stops, including stretches of road running alongside the Afghan border, offering glimpses into daily life in Afghan villages across the river.

Kalai Khumb to Khorog (290 km, 6–7 hrs)

After breakfast, we continue driving to Khorog, the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. Set in a dramatic canyon and surrounded by high mountain peaks, Khorog is one of the most picturesque towns in the Pamirs. En route, we follow the Panj River, which forms the natural border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and visit the Karon ruins, often referred to as the Machu Picchu of Central Asia. In Khorog, we visit the local bazaar or the botanical gardens, the second highest in the world.

Accommodation: 2* hotel

Khorog to Bachor (140 km, 7–8 hrs)

After an early breakfast, we drive to the village of Bachor. If time allows, there will be an opportunity to explore the village on foot, with its traditional houses and welcoming atmosphere. Situated at 3,170 metres above sea level, Bachor is an ideal place to acclimatise and interact with local residents before the trek begins.

Accommodation: Homestay

Bachor – Kavch Spring

Wake up to views of snow-capped mountains in Bachor. After breakfast, we begin our trek towards Kavch Spring at an altitude of 3,600 metres. The hike takes approximately five to six hours. On arrival, we set up camp and enjoy a home-cooked dinner before settling into our tents for the night.

Trek details: 10 km, +430 m, 5–6 hrs

Accommodation: Camping

Kavch Hot Spring (Acclimatisation Day)

Today is dedicated to acclimatisation. We hike up to the Kavch hot hydrogen sulfide springs, located at 4,200 metres. Those who wish can bathe in the springs, which locals believe have healing properties, and enjoy a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, we descend back to base camp at Kavch.

Trek details: 6 km, +/-600 m, 4–5 hrs

Accommodation: Camping

Kavch Spring – Chashin Lake

After breakfast, we begin a full day of trekking from Kavch Spring to Chashin Lake, located at 4,300 metres. This is a remote and striking section of the trek, with expansive views of snow-covered peaks along the route.

Trek details: 10 km, +600 m, 6–7 hrs

Accommodation: Camping (4,300 m)

Chashin Lake – Zaroshkkul Lake

Today’s hike is slightly shorter but continues to gain altitude, as we ascend from Chashin Lake to Zaroshkkul Lake at 4,518 metres. We first hike to a viewpoint overlooking the surrounding mountains and Zaroshkkul Lake, widely considered one of the most photogenic lakes in the region. We then descend to the lakeshore and set up camp. Clear night skies often make this an excellent spot for Milky Way photography.

Trek details: 6 km, +410 m, -218 m, 6–7 hrs

Accommodation: Camping

Zaroshkkul Lake – Kulen Lakes

We trek today towards the Shtik Lazar glacier, climbing to a high pass where small glacial lakes can be seen. From here, we descend to the Kulen Lakes. This marks the highest point of the trek, reaching close to 4,800 metres.

Trek details: 10 km, +390 m, -220 m

Accommodation: Camping

Kulen Lakes – Uchkul Lake

After breakfast, we set off early, enjoying panoramic views over Kulen Lake. The trail leads to Zaurbek pasture at 4,100 metres, where yaks, sheep, and other mountain livestock graze. From here, we continue to Uchkul Lake at 4,300 metres and establish camp in a spectacular high-altitude setting.

Trek details: 11 km, +200 m, -200 m, 5–6 hrs

Accommodation: Camping

Uchkul Lake – Chapdarkul Lake

We begin today with a trek of around five hours to the fork of Langar Pass, passing through rugged alpine terrain. From there, we ascend towards Chapdarkul Lake, a striking alpine lake set at 4,553 metres. The climb is demanding, but the scenery and sense of isolation make it a rewarding day on the trail.

Trek details: 12 km, +310 m, -100 m

Accommodation: Camping

Chapdarkul Lake – Bachor Pasture

We begin a long descent towards Bachor pasture, following the Langar River through a wide valley. The route passes numerous yak herds and open grazing land, eventually reaching Lower Bachor pasture at 3,630 metres, located at the confluence of the Chapdarkul and Gunt rivers.

Trek details: 19 km, +60 m, -1,340 m, approx. 8 hrs

Accommodation: Camping

Bulunkul – Khorog

Today we cross the Gunt River below the Yashilkul Lake dam. Depending on water levels, the crossing may be done on foot or with vehicle assistance. After completing the crossing, we drive to Bulunkul village for lunch before continuing by road to Khorog.

Trek details: 8 km, +300 m, -400 m, 3 hrs

Accommodation: 3* Lal Hotel

Khorog – Kalai Khumb

After an early breakfast, we begin the long drive back to Kalai Khumb along the M41 highway. This is a full travel day, so patience is required, but the route offers classic Pamir scenery throughout.

Accommodation: Guesthouse

Kalai Khumb – Dushanbe

Today we drive back to Dushanbe, taking the northern route through the Gharm Valley, conditions permitting.

Accommodation: 4* Atlas Hotel

Their service is second to none and I highly recommend using them if you are considering a trip to Tajikistan. We had the most incredible trip with a small group of five in the Fann Mountains. Our guide, cook, and porters were friendly, professional, and highly competent. The equipment they provided were top quality. As a local company, they are able to offer flexibility and accommodate your needs unlike some more well known international operations who rely on local companies themselves. Communication (in English) was also excellent before, during, and after the trip.

Paramount Journey did a fantastic job organizing a relatively last minute trip to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan! Everything was exceptionally smooth, from the moment we landed in Dushanbe to being dropped off at the airport in Urgench. We had two parts of our trip, one guided section hiking the Fann mountains in Tajikistan, and one self-guided section in Uzbekistan.

They were incredibly flexible with our requests, helping us arrange a self-guided experience in Uzbekistan while still taking care of all the hotels and transportation and also taking into account my requests about the hiking route we would take while in Tajikistan. Also our mountain guide in Tajikistan was knowledgeable and a pleasure to hike with!

At 2019 me and my husband visited Tajikistan at the first time. We did the Chimtarga pass trek with paramount Journey. As we finished the trek we knew that we will come again to Tajikistan.

After 4 years we came! This time we did the Pamirs lake circuit, starting from Bachor village and finishing at Bulunkul village.it is a stunning 9 days trek, the wide valleys, the lakes, the glaciers, the colours and the remote atmosphere make this trek very unique! Do not skip Shtik Lazar pass and Chapdarkul lake!!! The drive to the start point on the Pamir highway is very intresting, you can see the Afgan villiges at the other side, we stopped for overnight at Kalai khomb, chorog and Bachor and learned alot from our guide , Humoyun, about history, culture and costoms of Tajikistan and central Asia. Our driver, Miraj, is a professional!! We felt in good hands and he was so kind and invited us for a stop at his home for tea and refreshments.

We had 4 team members during the trek: our guide, Humoyun, vohid, the cook, who made tasty and healthy meals and also gave us a lot from his knowledge about the area and Hursand and Rukstan from Bachor village who lead the donkey's and were so friendly!!!.

This whole team were lovely company!

Alovaddin was all the time behind the scence, getting reports from Humoyun that we are eatting well and feeling well and we appreciate that very much!

It was obvious for us that we will trek with Paramount Journey second time because with this company you get the best, you feel safe and you leave Tajikistan not just with the experience of the trek but also with a lot of knowledge about Tajikistan and central Asia.

So if you were thinking about visiting Tajikistan, Paramount Journey is the best choice!! We travelled with them twice!

I joined a 7-days trekking tour in the Fann mountains, including the lakes and the challenging Chimtarga pass.

First, Paramount was very reactive and flexible. They adapted the tour to my own schedule. The group was small (4 people).

Since this is a challenging trek, Paramount organizes donkeys and professional porters to carry most of your stuff. They also transfer the luggage you don t need for the trek to arrival.

The itinerary is very well conceived to make sure the trekkers are ready for the Chimtarga pass. A small "challenge", the Alauddin pass, on the second day of the trek, enables the guide and trekkers to check whether they are physically fit. Acclimatation to altitude is progressive and went very smoothly.

The guide, the cook and the porters know the Fann mountains extremely well and all questions, whether related to geology, animals, vegetation, culture, history, linguistics, received very rich and complete answers.

Moreover, we had the opportunity to enjoy homemade warm food every evening, which surely made de trek more enjoyable.

I highly recommend Paramount journey, this is a serious travel agency, which is dedicated to develop quality tourism in Tajikistan.

It was a wonderful experience: visit of Dushanbe and Iskanderkul lake, trek in the Fann Mountains, home stay in villages and visit of Samarkand (19 days).

The organization by Paramount Journey was excellent at all levels! From picking us up at the airport very early in the morning to drop us back in the middle of the night, everything was perfect. The drivers were very pleasant and careful, the hotels and the food were great, our guide Zikrio is very competent, speaks good English, attentive to the group's capacity, the days were very balanced. The cook, the donkey men and the porters were very good, we had very joyful evenings around a bond fire! Staying at the cook and donkey man village was a wonderful experience. The trek in the mountains is fabulous, hard but breathtaking!

The visit to Samarkand was very well organized: transport, the crossing of the border (an experience in itself!), very pleasant family hotel, excellent French speaking guide, good restaurants. The service is really all-included (except the tips and the alcohol). I very warmly recommend Paramount Journey.
