Kyrgyz guided tours planned our trip really well. They were very accommodating and customized our trip based on our preferences. Our guide Motez was the best, very sweet and helpful. He took us around all the places and showed us the best views and experiences in the country. The accomodations booked were very good, loved all our stays. This was one of the best trips for us. I highly recommend booking your trip with kyrygz guided tours.
Shamshy Gorge to Son-Kul Lake Trekking Tour
12 day guided trekking in the Tian-Shan mountains
One of the most interesting treks in Kyrgyzstan, this remarkable journey begins in the stunning Shamshy Gorge and winds, over 10 incredible days, towards the shimmering beauty of Son Kul Lake.
As you leave the remnants of the once-great city of Balasagun behind, you’ll wander through lush jailoos and tranquil valleys, where the rhythm of life is dictated by the seasons and the movements of the herds. The path draws you ever closer to the breathtaking Son-Kul Lake, a shimmering expanse nestled at 3016 meters above sea level, cradled by formidable mountains that rise to 3700 meters.
Your trek will take you through the enchanting Kyrgyz Range, from one vibrant jailoo to another, where you’ll meet welcoming shepherd families in their remote meadows. Here, life slows down, and you'll find delight in the simple pleasures: homemade jams, bread fresh from the oven, and the distinctive taste of kymyz, the traditional fermented mare’s milk that embodies the essence of this land.
Navigating the untouched beauty of the Jumgal rayon, you’ll ascend the Jalgyz Karagai Pass, where the landscape opens up to reveal panoramic views that are nothing short of spectacular. This journey is a dance between adventure and tranquility, where every step brings a new encounter with nature and culture, leading you to the serene shores of Son-Kul itself.

Day 2 –8
Trekking from Shamshy Gorge to Son-Kul Lake
Song Kul Lake
Over the course of seven days and seven nights, you’ll embark on an unforgettable journey through some of Kyrgyzstan’s most breathtaking, untouched wilderness. Starting in the remote pastures of Iri-Suu jailoo, your trek takes you deep into the heart of the Kyrgyz mountains, over high-altitude passes, and into sweeping valleys that feel as if they belong to another world. Each day is an adventure, as you cross rugged mountain ridges, navigate flower-filled meadows, and descend into vast grasslands where the only sounds are the wind and the occasional eagle circling above.
The journey takes you over the 3400-meter Buchuk Pass, revealing panoramic views of the wild and untamed landscape that lies ahead. Marmots scatter across the ridges as you descend into the Sook Valley, a place where vibrant wildflowers burst with color in the summer sun. The terrain constantly shifts beneath your feet—one day you’re winding through narrow gorges, the next you’re making your way up to soaring peaks that offer 360-degree views of the mountain ranges that stretch endlessly into the horizon.
Each night, you’ll camp under a canopy of stars, far from any signs of modern life. Whether it’s by the side of a mountain river or on a grassy plateau surrounded by jagged peaks, your campsites offer a front-row seat to nature’s most dramatic performances. As you trek across passes as high as 3650 meters, the air becomes thin, but the sense of awe at standing on the roof of the world is incomparable.
Along the way, you’ll pass through remote jailoos—traditional summer pastures where Kyrgyz shepherds tend to their herds. You’ll have the chance to meet these shepherds and perhaps share a meal with them in their yurts, tasting the simple, hearty foods that have sustained nomads for centuries.
Eventually the landscape transforms into a vast basin where Son-Kul Lake shimmers like a jewel, reflecting the sky and surrounding mountains. After days of rugged trekking, the sight of this high-altitude lake, framed by rolling hills and grazing livestock, feels like a reward. Your final night will be spent in the traditional yurt camp, where you’ll share stories with your fellow travelers and enjoy the warmth of Kyrgyz hospitality.
Day 9
Son-Kul to Issyk-Kul or return to Bishkek
Lake Issyk Kul
On day nine you have the option of returning direct to Bishkek or extending your trip with a final night at Cholpon-Ata on the breathtaking Issyk-Kul Lake.
Once you reach Cholpon-Ata, you have the option to either spend the night in this charming beach resort town, enjoying the stunning views and relaxing by the lake, or return directly to Bishkek for your final night. If you choose to stay overnight, you can unwind on the shores of Issyk-Kul, perhaps take a dip in the refreshing waters, and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant or your accommodation.
After you'll return to Bishkek for your onward journey.

Wonderful trip to still virgin lands and inhabited by extraordinary people. Thanks to the organization of Kyrgyz guide Tour the trip became a daily discovery. Very professional they proved - first in the person of Ilyas during the organization, and then during the trip with the excellent Altyn - a high-level team. I will return to these places ... :-)
