Son-Kul to Issyk-Kul Trek
Experience the beauty and nature of the Tian-Shan
Immerse yourself in the natural splendour of the Tian Shan Mountains, one of the highlights of any Kyrgyzstan trek, meeting the nomadic herdsmen who reside with their families in the alpine meadows.
This trek is not particularly challenging and is suitable for groups with kids. If you relish hiking through serene, tranquil mountains, aren't pressed for time, and have a passion for outdoor life, this may be the hike for you.
This 10-day fully guided trek is designed for those who wish to explore the stunning beauty of the Tian Shan Mountains at their own pace. It requires reasonable physical fitness, the ability to handle unpredictable situations, and a deep appreciation for nature. In the mountains, you will follow ancient paths forged by nomads and their animals over centuries. You'll cross three high mountain passes (over 3,500 metres) and meet the herdsmen who, during the summer, live in the alpine meadows with their families and livestock.
Trip notes
Walking days typically range from five to eight hours. Our group comprises four to eight trekkers, along with six to 12 horses, a guide, porters and an interpreter. Our porters transport all your luggage, equipment, and provisions on horseback. During the trek from Son-Kul to Tuura-Suu, you'll sleep in small tents or in yurt camps.
This itinerary begins in Son-Kul and ends at Issyk-Kul. We highly recommend adding a night in our lakeside yurt camps before and after the trek. We can organise an extended itinerary with additional rest days and gentle hiking before the trek begins. Contact us for more details.

What you'll see and do
Day 1
To Son-Kul
Song Kul Lake

Road transfer from your hotel to Son-Kul, the start point of the trek. The journey involves ascending the Kalmak-Ashuu Pass (3,440 metres) via numerous hairpin bends, after which you'll soon arrive at Son-Kul Lake.
Son-Kul is Kyrgyzstan’s second-largest lake, situated 3,016 metres above sea level. The lake spans 29 kilometres in length and 18 kilometres in width, with an average depth of 13 metres. Son-Kul lies on a broad plateau, encircled by mountains that reach heights of around 4,000 metres. The plateau is home to many shepherd families who spend the entire summer here with their cattle, sheep, and yaks.
Be prepared for cold nights and bring warm clothing. This is not a place for swimming or bathing, as the shoreline is muddy and mostly consists of marshland.
Day 2
Acclimatisation day
Song Kul Lake

Settle into the yurt camp and take some time to acclimatise to the altitude. Enjoy a leisurely day exploring the stunning surroundings, whether it's taking a gentle walk through the rugged landscape or simply relaxing and soaking in the serene atmosphere. In the evening, return to your cosy yurt for a comfortable stay under the stars.
Day 3
Trek begins
Song Kul Lake

Your trekking adventure begins today. The first leg takes you through the mountainous terrain surrounding Lake Son-Kul, starting at an altitude of 3,100 metres. You'll experience some gradual ascents and descents, crossing a small stream via a bridge. By late afternoon, you'll reach an elevation of 3,200 metres, where you'll set up camp for the night.
Approx. 6 hours hiking
Day 4
Song Kul Lake

Continue your trek through alpine meadows, blanketed with wildflowers. Along the way, you'll encounter semi-wild horses, sheep, and yaks grazing in the vast pastures. The route includes a steady climb up to 3,400 metres before a slight descent. By the end of the day, you'll reach an altitude of 3,900 metres, where you’ll pitch your tents.
Approx. 8.5 hours hiking
Day 5
Dolon Pass
Song Kul Lake

Begin your descent towards the Dolon Pass, crossing the main road that leads to China at an altitude of 3,530 metres. Here, a vehicle from Ecotour can meet you with fresh supplies. You’ll have the option to either stay in tents or take shelter in a small cabin at 3,050 metres.
Approx. 4 hours hiking
Day 6
Solton Sary Valley
Song Kul Lake

Today's trek starts at 3,055 metres and features only slight changes in elevation. You'll hike through the Solton Sary Valley, traversing alpine meadows and occasionally ascending or descending by a few hundred metres. You’ll encounter local shepherds with their flocks, who spend the summer in this idyllic landscape. By the end of the day, you'll set up camp at 2,900 metres.
Approx. 6 hours hiking
Day 7
Kaslika-Suur Pass
Song Kul Lake

Setting off from 2,900 metres, you'll climb steadily, reaching the Kaslika-Suur Pass at 3,654 metres by noon. After a descent, you’ll arrive at the Kara Kajur Valley, where the mountain village of Lakol is situated at 3,191 metres. You'll cross the river via a bridge and set up camp shortly after.
Approx. 8 hours hiking
Day 8
Tarski Ala Too Pass
Song Kul Lake

Start early for another challenging day of trekking, which includes a high pass. By midday, you'll reach the Tarski Ala Too Pass at 3,640 metres. The route offers several crossing options, and your guide will determine the best one based on the conditions. After crossing the pass, you’ll set up camp for the night.
Approx. 8 hours hiking
Day 9
Ulakol River
Song Kul Lake

Begin your descent towards the valley, gradually making your way down. By late afternoon, you’ll reach the Ulakol River at 3,141 metres. After crossing the river, continue trekking until you reach an elevation of 2,500 metres, where you’ll set up camp for the night.
Approx. 4 hours hiking
Day 10
Tuura-Suu
Song Kul Lake

Today’s trek is relatively easy as you descend to the village of Tuura-Suu, situated at 2,200 metres, near the south shore of lake Issy Kul. You’re expected to arrive in the afternoon, where you'll either enjoy a homestay with a local family or be transferred to Kochkor for the night.

The trip was absolutely fantastic! 🙂
Noorzat & Azamat looked us after us very well and both did a brilliant job.
Indeed, we thoroughly enjoyed Kyrgyzstan and will both highly recommend the country to our friends/family as well as endeavor to do a second visit to discover more of the country.
1. Communication with that team – Ecoutour specially Adri were very responsive, answered all our questions and provided detailed information
2. Bespoke tour based on our requests and requirements. This was very important for us as we didn’t want to just follow the other tours / tourists
3. Tour guide and driver – were both great and did a brilliant job
4. True homestay and Yurts experience – we appreciated that we were given the opportunity to experience staying with local families rather than just places made up for tourists

Super recommended!!
I found Ecoutour on the internet (and on the guide-book as well) and I was so lucky!
They are very precise and cooperative in finding the best solution for my needs, very welcoming to let you discover the tradition and culture of this beautiful country!
I was very lucky to have the best guide ever and a very safe driver during the mountains and yurt camps tour.

We had a wonderful time on the textiles tour! Leaning how to do Shyrdak was my favorite part. Kenje was the best guide, knowledgeable, patient and kind.
