Mt Meru trekking itinerary
Tanzania’s lesser–known hike for discerning trekkers
Lots of people ask me about climbing Kilimanjaro – only discerning hikers ask about the Meru trek. If you’re looking for a Tanzania trek but with fewer crowds, this is the one for you.
Over four days, the hike takes you through a variety of landscapes—from open grasslands where giraffes and buffaloes roam to lush montane forests alive with bird calls, and finally into the stark, dramatic alpine zone near the summit.
With ranger support throughout, there’s a reassuring sense of safety, even when walking through areas frequented by wildlife. And then, of course, there’s the summit. Reaching Socialist Peak at sunrise is truly unforgettable—the views of Kilimanjaro, the ash cone, and the plains stretching endlessly below are worth every step of the climb.
The huts along the way are basic but comfortable enough for a good night’s rest, and the trek is well-organised without feeling overly structured. It’s physically demanding at times, especially with the altitude, but if you pace yourself, it’s manageable and incredibly rewarding. For anyone looking to experience the beauty of Tanzania beyond Kilimanjaro, I always recommend the Meru Trek as a great alternative.

Suggested itinerary

Momella Gate to Socialist Peak
Day 1 in Mt. Meru
Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Elevation Gain: 1,014m (3,327 ft)
The journey begins at Momella Gate, where permits and entry formalities are completed. The trail ascends gently through the varied landscapes of Arusha National Park, transitioning from open grasslands to patches of montane forest. Along the way, sightings of wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, and warthogs are common, and you'll be accompanied by a park ranger for safety.
The path is well-trodden but can be muddy after rain, so sturdy, waterproof boots are recommended. The forest provides a cool, shaded environment, with occasional clearings offering glimpses of Mount Meru’s dramatic ridges. Bird enthusiasts may spot species such as hornbills and turacos.
The day’s trek concludes at Miriakamba Hut, situated at 2,514 metres (8,248 feet). The hut, basic but functional, provides basic dormitory-style accommodation with bunk beds and mattresses. Outdoor seating gives you views of Mount Kilimanjaro to the east, particularly striking during sunrise and sunset. There are communal dining facilities, and water is available but must be treated before drinking.

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
Day 2 in Mt. Meru
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Elevation Gain: 1,056m (3,464 ft)
Departing from Miriakamba Hut, the trail ascends steadily, weaving through dense forest and climbing into the giant heather zone. The air becomes cooler, and the vegetation transitions, with moss-draped trees giving way to towering heather and clusters of lobelias. This section of the trek is noticeably steeper, requiring a steady pace to manage the altitude gain effectively.
The path is well-marked and mostly shaded, but the terrain can be uneven, with occasional rocky stretches. Wildlife sightings are less frequent at this elevation, but sharp-eyed hikers might spot colobus monkeys in the canopy or catch the calls of mountain birds.
Saddle Hut, perched on a ridge at 3,570 metres (11,712 feet), serves as the day’s destination. The hut offers simple shelter, with shared sleeping quarters and an area for communal meals. From here, there’s an optional late-afternoon excursion to Little Meru, an ascent of approximately 250 metres (820 feet). This acclimatisation hike rewards with far-reaching views, including Mount Kilimanjaro and the plains below, and provides a preview of the summit conditions ahead. After the return to Saddle Hut, most hikers take the opportunity to rest early in preparation for the following day’s early start.

Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak and Return to Miriakamba Hut
Day 3 in Mt. Meru
Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Elevation Change: 3,570m (11,712 ft) to 4,566m (14,980 ft), then down to 2,514m (8,248 ft)
The final ascent begins in the early hours, typically around midnight, under the cover of darkness. Equipped with headlamps, you’ll follow the steep, rocky trail that winds its way up the ridges of Mount Meru. The route requires careful footing, particularly on loose scree and narrow sections.
Reaching Socialist Peak (4,566 metres / 14,980 feet) by sunrise is a moment of triumph. From this vantage point, the ash cone crater below appears otherworldly, and the panorama includes Mount Kilimanjaro, the Rift Valley, and the expansive plains of Tanzania.
The descent to Saddle Hut is steady but requires concentration, as fatigue and loose terrain can make the footing tricky. A well-earned breakfast awaits at the hut, offering a chance to recharge before continuing downhill. The path back to Miriakamba Hut retraces the previous day’s route, with the gradient easing as the trail drops into the forest.

Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate
Day 4 in Mt. Meru
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Loss: 1,014m (3,327 ft)
The final day’s descent from Miriakamba Hut is a relaxed and rewarding conclusion to the trek. The trail gently winds downhill, passing through forests alive with birdsong.
The trek ends at Momella Gate, where the group gathers for a quiet moment of celebration. Certificates of achievement are presented, marking the successful completion of Mount Meru’s ascent. From here, transportation awaits to return to Arusha.
