Kelvin is a great guide with experience and easy to contact. The description of the tour was clear and respect all the time. We were pleased to make two tours, a 2 days in Amboseli park and 4 days in Mont Longonot, Hell’s gate, lake Naivasha and lake Nakuru. Lodges chosen were just great. Awesome
Samburu and the Mara
Six-day small group safari
We designed this six-day itinerary as a focused circuit between two of Kenya's most distinct wildlife regions, with a night at Lake Naivasha providing a quieter interlude between them. The trip moves north to south: two days in Samburu, one night on the lake, then two full days in the Masai Mara.
Samburu is the reason to start in the north. The reserve sits along the Ewaso Nyiro River in semi-arid country that looks and feels entirely different from the southern parks - the vegetation is sparse, the light is harder, and the species are different. The Samburu Special Five (reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk) are endemic to this ecosystem and found nowhere else on the itinerary. Elephants are present in good numbers along the river, and lions and leopards use the riverine forest edge. Day 2 includes a visit to a local Samburu community, giving context to the landscape and the people who have lived alongside its wildlife for generations.
Lake Naivasha is a single night, used well: an afternoon boat safari covers the lake's hippo pools and birdlife, and a walk on Crescent Island allows foot-level encounters with giraffe, zebra, and antelope with no vehicles. From there, two full days in the Masai Mara bring the trip to a close. The Mara's predator density is high year-round; between July and October the wildebeest migration passes through, with river crossings that can occur at any point during a game drive. All game drives are conducted in 4x4 Land Cruisers with a professional driver-guide.

What you'll see and do
This is a customisable trip
Use the following itinerary for inspiration. Remember: all days, hotels and activities can be altered to suit your requirements. A Olengugih Safaris travel specialist will be happy to advise.
Day 1
Nairobi to Samburu Afternoon Game Drive
Nairobi
Today you'll drive north from Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve, arriving in time for a late afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River. This is your introduction to the Samburu Special Five: reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk - all endemic to this semi-arid northern region. Elephants move freely along the river, and the evening light along the riverine vegetation is good for leopard sightings.
Day 2
Full Day in the Reserve and Village Visit
Samburu Game Reserve
Morning and afternoon game drives cover Samburu's open plains and river circuits. The combination of riverine forest and open thorn-scrub produces varied sightings: the Samburu Five alongside elephants, lions, leopards, and a wide range of birds including vultures, bee-eaters, and Somali ostriches. During the day there is a visit to a local Samburu community.
Day 3
Samburu to Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha
After breakfast you'll drive south to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake in the Rift Valley fringed by acacia and papyrus. An afternoon boat safari covers the hippo pools and waterbird colonies - pelicans, herons, African fish eagles, and kingfishers are all present. A walk on Crescent Island allows closer, quieter encounters with giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and gazelle on foot.
Day 4
Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara
Masai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast you'll drive west to the Masai Mara National Reserve, passing through Rift Valley scenery and Maasai pastoral country. You arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive across the Mara's open grassland. The shift in landscape from the north is immediate: wide plains, dense game, and the Mara River cutting through the western circuit.
Day 5
Masai Mara: Full Day on the Plains
Masai Mara National Reserve
A full day of game drives, with packed lunch taken in the field. The Mara holds high concentrations of lion, leopard, and cheetah year-round, alongside elephant, buffalo, hippo, and crocodile. Between July and October, wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River in large numbers; the crossings are unpredictable and worth positioning for. The guide will adapt the route to recent sightings throughout the day.
Day 6
Village Visit and Return to Nairobi
Nairobi
A morning visit to a local Maasai community before the drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon.
