We've tailored this Kenya safari to give you a taste of our glorious country's absolute highlights, while getting you away from the busiest reserves and parks.

From the arid charm of Samburu to the lush plains of Ol Pejeta, each day offers a new layer of Kenya’s beauty. Samburu’s rugged, semi-desert terrain is home to rare species like Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe, while Ol Pejeta offers an unparalleled chance to witness the conservation efforts protecting the endangered rhinos and visit the world’s last two northern white rhinos.

As you move south, the landscapes shift—from the birdlife-rich shores of Lake Nakuru, to the vast savannas of the Masai Mara, teeming with the drama of predator and prey. A visit to Lake Naivasha adds a touch of serenity, where you can glide across the water among hippos and herons before making your way to Amboseli. The towering silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro provides the backdrop as you round out the adventure with elephants and big cats roaming the plains.Customise this trip

This is a customisable trip

Use the following itinerary for inspiration. Remember: all days, hotels and activities can be altered to suit your requirements. A Beyond the Plains Safaris travel specialist will be happy to advise.

Arrival to Nairobi

Welcome to Kenya! Our representative will greet you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to whisk you from the airport to the Radisson Blu Hotel. Located in the heart of Nairobi, the hotel offers a serene retreat, where comfort and tranquility await after your travels. As evening approaches, the inviting aromas from the hotel’s restaurant beckon, promising a taste of Kenya’s rich culinary heritage. It’s a quiet introduction to the adventure ahead, setting the tone for the experiences to come.

Featured Accommodation
Two days in Samburu

After an early breakfast, you’ll leave Nairobi behind and embark on a scenic drive toward Samburu National Reserve, passing through the lush landscapes of the central highlands. Samburu is home to rare species like the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk, as well as the more familiar elephants, lions, and leopards. Upon arrival at Ashnil Camp, settle in and enjoy a leisurely lunch. Later, head out on your first game drive, where the unique semi-arid terrain of Samburu—marked by riverine forests and dry plains—provides a striking backdrop for the diverse wildlife.

The following morning, venture out early for a game drive at sunrise, when the reserve’s animals are most active. The Ewaso Nyiro River, which winds through Samburu, is a lifeline for the wildlife, with herds of elephants and other animals often seen along its banks. After a picnic lunch in the park, continue your safari through the reserve’s rugged landscape, from open plains to volcanic mountains and doum palms. This less-travelled corner of Kenya offers an authentic, peaceful safari experience. In the evening, return to camp for dinner and a quiet night to reflect on the day’s discoveries.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

After breakfast, leave the wilds of Samburu behind and journey south to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in the Laikipia region. Renowned for its conservation efforts, Ol Pejeta is a sanctuary for endangered species, including the last two remaining northern white rhinos in the world. After settling in, you'll head out for an afternoon game drive through the conservancy, where you’ll encounter a range of wildlife and visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Kenya’s only refuge for these primates. As the day winds down, return to your lodge for a delicious dinner, reflecting on the unique wildlife experiences of the day.

Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru National Park

After breakfast at Ol Pejeta, begin your scenic drive south to Lake Nakuru National Park, passing through Kenya’s central highlands and the vast Rift Valley. Arrive at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, where you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of the lake. After a leisurely lunch, take some time to relax and soak in the serene surroundings before setting off for an evening game drive. Lake Nakuru is renowned for its vibrant flocks of flamingos, which can sometimes cover the shores in a blanket of pink. The park also boasts a rhino sanctuary and abundant wildlife, including lions, leopards, and buffaloes. Return to the lodge for a quiet dinner and overnight stay, reflecting on the day's wildlife encounters.

Featured Accommodation
Into the Mara

After an early breakfast, set off for the world-renowned Masai Mara, home to the iconic Big Five and the awe-inspiring Great Migration. Upon arrival at Zebra Plains Mara Camp, take a moment to settle in and enjoy lunch before heading out for your first game drive across the Mara’s vast, golden plains. The wildlife here is abundant—lions lounging in the grass, elephants roaming in herds, cheetahs racing across the savannah, and, with some luck, a rare leopard in the distance. As evening falls, return to camp for a hearty dinner and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the African night.

On the following day, venture out on a full-day exploration of Masai Mara. After breakfast, head into the reserve with packed lunches in tow. Midday, stop at a scenic point by the Mara River, a gathering place for hippos and crocodiles, and enjoy a picnic surrounded by the wilderness. The rest of the day is spent discovering different corners of the reserve, with opportunities to spot a wide range of animals in their natural habitats. As the sun sets, return to camp for dinner, reflecting on a day filled with unforgettable moments in one of the world’s greatest safari destinations.

Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, leave the expansive plains of the Masai Mara behind and head towards Lake Naivasha, nestled in the heart of the Great Rift Valley. Upon arrival at Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort, settle in and enjoy a leisurely lunch with breathtaking views of the lake. In the afternoon, take to the water on a boat safari, where you'll have the chance to spot hippos lounging near the shores and a variety of birdlife, including majestic fish eagles soaring overhead. Later, visit Crescent Island for a walking safari, where you can meander alongside giraffes, zebras, and other herbivores in their peaceful sanctuary. Return to the resort for dinner, where you can unwind and reflect on another extraordinary day amidst Kenya’s natural beauty.

Two days in Amboseli

After breakfast, depart from the tranquil shores of Lake Naivasha and journey south to Amboseli National Park. Upon arrival, check in to Ol Tukai Lodge, where you'll be greeted with a view of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, towering above the park’s expansive plains. After a leisurely lunch, head out for your first game drive, where you’ll likely encounter Amboseli’s iconic elephant herds, alongside lions, cheetahs, and perhaps even the elusive hyena. As evening falls, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

The following day is dedicated to a full exploration of Amboseli. After breakfast, embark on a morning game drive to witness the park’s abundant wildlife, including large herds of elephants, buffaloes, and zebras. At midday, enjoy a picnic lunch in a scenic spot, surrounded by the beauty of the park. The afternoon brings more opportunities to observe the park’s incredible wildlife before heading back to the lodge for dinner and a restful night.

Featured Accommodation
Departure from Nairobi

After an early breakfast at Ol Tukai Lodge, set out for one last game drive through Amboseli, soaking in the views of the park and its wildlife one final time. As the morning light casts its glow over the plains, it’s a perfect moment to reflect on the journey. Later, begin your drive back to Nairobi, where upon arrival, you’ll visit the renowned Giraffe Center. Here, you’ll have the chance to get up close to the endangered Rothschild giraffes, learning about their conservation and feeding them by hand. Afterward, you’ll be transferred to your hotel or directly to the airport for your onward journey.

What people are saying about Beyond the Plains Safaris

Beyond The Plains were very quick in replying to our inquiry. They offered an exciting itinerary for the Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru. We were traveling as a family, and they took this into account and arranged for activities that were great for all. We all enjoyed the safari a lot. I have been on several safaris and this was indeed one of the best! We saw all Big 5 and many more animals. Accommodation and food were great. This was a wonderful time. We even celebrated a birthday on the first day, and Beyond the Plains organized a surprise cake and flowers! Everything worked smooth, and the team was very responsive and communicative. Highly recommended!

We had a fantastic time with Beyond the Plains in Kenya and can wholeheartedly recommend booking your tours with them! Starting with John's great communication and presentation we had a good feeling from the start about their proposed 7-day Safari tour. Everything was well organised and the tour felt adventurous and luxurious at the same time. A special thanks goes to our guide Dan who shared his 20 years of safari experience with us. He never got tired of answering our many questions and made sure we had a fantastic time. We really couldn't have asked for a better guide and driver. We reviewed many offers from different tour operators and are very happy we chose to go with Beyond the Plains and hope to do it again one day!
