Uganda rewards travellers who slow down. Its forests and parks are places you experience on foot and at close quarters, whether tracking gorillas in Bwindi, walking with chimpanzees in Kibale, or spending time in quieter corners of Queen Elizabeth National Park. This journey is designed around that idea: fewer people, the right places to stay, and enough time to let each experience unfold properly.

Why this trip

On a typical group tours in Uganda you can expect big groups, rustic accommodation and whistlestop itineraries. When days move quickly from one highlight to the next, even exceptional experiences like gorilla and chimp tracking can feel fleeting, with little space to slow down and take it in.

Our journey is deliberately slower and smaller, limited to a maximum of eight guests. That scale opens doors to lodges and camps that sit inside or directly alongside the environments you’ve come to experience, rather than on their margins. It also allows the journey to breathe: time to recover after a gorilla trek, to walk, to talk things through with your guide, and to spend unhurried days in places that most group itineraries pass through quickly.

We’ve designed this journey to offer the best of all worlds: the depth, access and intimacy of a private safari, combined with the ease, sociability and value of travelling as a small group.

Detailed itinerary

What you'll see and do

Arrival in Entebbe

Arrive into Entebbe and settle in by the shores of Lake Victoria. This first day is intentionally light, allowing time to recover from international flights while the group assembles. For those arriving early, there is the option to visit Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, offering an early introduction to Uganda’s primate story before heading inland. The evening is free to relax and prepare for the journey ahead.

Into the highlands: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

A light aircraft flight carries you south over Lake Victoria and into Uganda’s highlands, followed by a road transfer into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The change in landscape is immediate: dense rainforest, steep ridges and mist-filled valleys. The afternoon is kept flexible, allowing time to settle into the forest environment and prepare for the days of gorilla tracking ahead.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi

Today is dedicated to one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters: tracking mountain gorillas on foot in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Guided by expert trackers and rangers, you follow trails through thick forest in search of a habituated gorilla family. The experience is physically demanding, intimate and deeply absorbing. The afternoon is deliberately unstructured, giving time to rest, reflect, or visit nearby communities if energy allows.

Optional second gorilla trek and onward to Ishasha

There is the option this morning to undertake a second gorilla trek for those wishing to deepen the experience. Later, the journey continues north by road into the remote Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The forest gives way to open savannah and riverine woodland as you enter one of the park’s quietest and least visited areas.

Ishasha: a quieter Queen Elizabeth

A full day exploring the southern reaches of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Game drives here feel very different from the busier northern sectors, with fewer vehicles and a stronger sense of space. The area is known for its relaxed pace and consistent wildlife sightings, including elephant, buffalo and the region’s distinctive tree-climbing lions. Evenings are spent beside the river, with wildlife moving through camp.

North through Queen Elizabeth and the Kazinga Channel

Travel north through Queen Elizabeth National Park by way of game drive, gradually transitioning from Ishasha’s remote savannah to the park’s central waterways. In the afternoon, a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel offers a contrasting perspective, drifting past hippo pods, crocodiles and prolific birdlife as the channel links Lake Edward and Lake George.

Chimpanzees of Kyambura Gorge

An early start takes you into Kyambura Gorge, a steep, forested ravine cutting through the savannah. Here you track a small, isolated population of chimpanzees, an experience that contrasts sharply with forest tracking elsewhere in Uganda. The afternoon is spent back overlooking the Kazinga Channel, with time to rest after the trek.

Kibale Forest

Continuing east by road, the journey moves into Kibale Forest, one of Africa’s most important primate research areas. The landscape shifts again to tall rainforest and crater lakes. After arrival, there is time to explore nearby wetlands and forest edges, easing into the final stage of the safari.

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale

A second chimpanzee tracking experience takes place this morning, this time in Kibale Forest itself. The forest here supports a large, well-studied chimp population, and encounters tend to be lively and prolonged. The afternoon is free to explore forest trails near the lodge or simply enjoy time surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Return to Entebbe and departure

A long road journey returns you to Entebbe in time for international departures. For those preferring to shorten the drive, a scheduled flight is available. The journey ends back on the shores of Lake Victoria, having traced a slow arc through Uganda’s forests, rivers and highlands.

I wanted the trip of a lifetime in Kenya and Tanzania and Paul at Fitzroy Travel organised the entire thing in the most superb fashion! I had a bucket list of places I wanted to see but specifically Lamu, Tsavo and Watamu in Kenya and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti in Tanzania. Paul finessed all the timings perfectly so that I would get to see some of the Great Migration as well. My safari guide in Tanzania was truly amazing - very knowledgeable and also great fun! It was like being on holiday with a friend. The accommodation was top-notch - very comfortable and always incredibly welcoming. I loved every single minute of this trip.

Fitzroy was excellent - having never been to Kenya before, we really appreciated them sorting everything from point A to point B. The hotels and lodges they booked on our behalf were all incredible - each with their own unique character - and the hospitality could not have been better throughout. Amazing food, amazing guides, and the kindest people. I would highly recommend to anyone travelling to Kenya, particularly if it's your first time.
