Honestly, we didn't know what to expect before heading to Bhutan, but Guide and Driver made this trip an absolute 10/10 experience. From day one, they were so warm, friendly, and just genuinely excited to show us around their beautiful country.
Culture of Bhutan with the Bumdra Trek
Small group culture & hiking tour of Bhutan
Bhutan is one of the most controlled tourism destinations in the world, which cuts both ways: the country is genuinely pristine, but who plans your trip matters more here than almost anywhere else.
We recommend Druk Asia, one of Bhutan's leading tour operators: guide quality, itinerary design and access are all noticeably better when you're with people who know the country properly.
The itinerary spends seven days moving between Thimphu, Punakha and Paro, finishing with the Bumdra Trek, one of the easier Bhutan treks. This one-night trek takes you to the Bumdra Monastery at 3,800 metres followed by a descent the next morning to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest). Almost everyone who visits Tiger's Nest walks up from the valley; coming down to it from the ridge is a different experience entirely.
The cultural side is equally well-considered: ancient dzongs, a fertility temple, the seat of Bhutan's government and its Central Monastic Body in the same building. It's a country that genuinely doesn't resemble anywhere else, and this itinerary is designed to reflect that rather than just tick the boxes.
Moderate fitness required. Small group and private departures available: get in touch to discuss your options.

Detailed itinerary
What you'll see and do
Day 1
Paro to Thimphu - First Impressions
Thimphu
You arrive at Paro International Airport, one of the more demanding approaches in commercial aviation: a steep descent between mountain ridges that requires specially certified pilots. A Druk Asia guide meets you on arrival before the drive to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital.
The afternoon is deliberately unscheduled - a walk through town, a first encounter with the architecture, prayer wheels and daily rhythms of a city that moves at its own speed.
Day 2
Thimphu - The Country in Miniature
Thimphu
The day opens at Buddha Dordenma, a 51-metre statue overlooking the valley, before continuing to the Memorial Chorten - a place of active daily worship rather than a set piece for tourists. The Motithang Takin Preserve offers a close look at Bhutan's improbable national animal; Simply Bhutan provides broader context on traditional craftsmanship and daily life. The day ends at Tashichho Dzong, seat of both the government and the Central Monastic Body - a combination that tells you something about how power is organised here.
Day 3
Dochula Pass and the Punakha Valley
Punakha
The drive east crosses Dochula Pass, where 108 memorial stupas stand against a Himalayan skyline. On a clear day the high peaks are visible to the north. The descent into Punakha brings a sharp change in climate - warmer, more subtropical, with rice paddies replacing pine forest. Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility, sits in the middle of this landscape. Punakha Dzong, built at the confluence of two rivers, is arguably the most beautiful fortress in the country.
Day 4
Paro Valley - Temples and Altitude
Paro
Back in Paro Valley, the day covers two significant sites: Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, built in the 7th century and still in active use; and Paro Dzong, which contains some of the finest traditional wall paintings in the country. The evening is free for a walk through Paro town before the trek begins the following morning.
Day 5
Into the High Country - The Bumdra Ascent
Paro
The trek begins at Sang Choekor, a small monastery above Paro, and climbs steadily through pine and rhododendron forest. The route is used by pilgrims and is not heavily trafficked; the silence above the treeline is one of its qualities. Camp is set at Bumdra Monastery at approximately 3,800 metres, with views across the valley and, on clear evenings, the outline of distant peaks.
Altitude acclimatisation matters here. The itinerary is designed to allow a gradual ascent, but guests should be aware that the campsite is high and the temperature drops significantly after dark.
Day 6
The Descent to Taktsang - A Rare Approach
Paro
The morning descent from Bumdra brings the trek to its defining moment: arriving at Taktsang Monastery from above. The monastery is built into a cliff face at 3,120 metres and is one of the most significant religious sites in Bhutan. Most visitors approach from below; this route arrives from the ridge, which offers a different relationship with the site and with the landscape around it.
After visiting the monastery, the descent continues to Paro town. The afternoon is unscheduled.
Day 7
Departure from Paro
Paro
Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure. Depending on your onward flight, there may be time for a final walk or a last breakfast in Paro before the transfer.

We had an amazing experience with Druk Asia. From booking to arriving and leaving everything was organised brilliantly. We were provided with an excellent guide Kinley and our driver Sangay was amazing. We covered a huge distance and Sangay coped with rain, sleet, sunshine and more hair pin bends than I care to remember. Whilst Kinley was knowledgeable and understanding when we forgot what he'd said previously. Everything from accommodation, travel, food and water was looked after we didn't need to worry about anything.

Yeshey Dorji and our driver Tsering made our Bhutan trip absolutely memorable. From planning our daily itinerary based on our requirements to arranging a birthday cake to celebrate my wife's birthday, they have been instrumental in making the trip special. Service was absolutely seamless, and we did not have to worry about anything at all. Was sad to leave Bhutan at the end of the trip! 5/5
