Our preferred hotels

Superior

Taj Gangtey Resort

At Taj Gangtey Resort & Spa, the rooms overlook the Phobjikha Valley, widely regarded as one of Bhutan's most beautiful landscapes. Being able to take in its vast, glacial sweep from the comfort of your room feels like luxury at its most effortless and soulful.

The property is newly opened and sits firmly in the premium category, with rates that reflect the level of service, setting, and overall experience you would expect from the Taj brand. Keep this in mind if you are travelling on a tighter budget or prefer simpler, more casual stays. This resort is very much about refined comfort, attentive hospitality, and the full Taj experience.

What to consider

The big trade-off is location. Perched in the spectacular valley, it is exquisite but decidedly off the beaten track, which means longer drives to reach other regions or attractions, especially in winter when mountain roads can be slower or occasionally tricky.

Some of the experiences you often don't realise are available until you arrive are the in-house activities designed to add a cultural or playful layer to the stay. Depending on the season and schedule, this can include guided mixology sessions at the bar, where local flavours are woven into classic cocktails, as well as hands-on experiences like a stupa-making class, offering a gentle introduction to Bhutanese symbolism and craftsmanship. These activities are usually small-group or intimate sessions and work best when booked in advance, especially during peak travel periods.

Classic

Taj Paro Resort

At Taj Paro Resort & Spa, you can see the iconic Tiger's Nest directly from the hotel. There is something quietly magical about holding a warm cup of coffee while gazing at it in the distance: unhurried, humbling, and almost spiritual in its own way.

What to consider

The quiet, almost remote setting that makes it so peaceful can also feel tucked-away if you love being in the heart of town or want pubs, cafés and shopping on your doorstep.

Deluxe

Zhiwaling Heritage

Zhiwaling Heritage is the only five-star property in Bhutan wholly owned by Bhutanese. It has been recognised by National Geographic as one of its Unique Lodges of the World, a distinction reserved for properties that offer extraordinary experiences rooted in responsible tourism, sustainability and local culture. It has also won awards from Condé Nast Traveler and was recently named Best Luxury Heritage Hotel in Bhutan at the Luxury Lifestyle Awards.

What stands out to me is the traditional architecture, the spacious rooms, and the quality of hospitality. The property has its own in-house temple, constructed from 450-year-old timbers from the famous Gangtey Monastery. You can use it for your own prayers and meditation.

You can also take part in a range of cultural activities on-site: traditional cooking classes, butter tea ceremonies, meditation sessions, ceramic painting. The garden is expansive, filled with flowers, and there is a pizza patio where you can sit under the stars. I have good memories of quiet evenings there.

What to consider

The location is peaceful and slightly removed from Paro town. If you want quiet and views, that works well. If you prefer being able to walk out to cafés, shops or nightlife, it is less convenient.

The property does have an elevator, which is useful if you have mobility issues.

The architecture and interiors are proudly traditional. If you define luxury purely through ultra-modern design or an international hotel atmosphere, this may not suit you. But if you value authenticity and cultural grounding, that is precisely the point.

Classic

Rimphu Heritage

Rimphu Heritage is a traditional homestay in Paro, housed in a sixth-generation ancestral home. It belonged originally to Tshongpa Gesha Tashi, a respected businessman who traded in the famous Paro Dzong. The current custodian, Angay Dawa Lham, still lives there, and you can meet her during your stay.

The house has been recently refurbished. What makes it unusual among Bhutanese homestays is that each guest room has its own dedicated private bathroom: rare for this type of accommodation. You still get the feeling of staying in a real family home, but with more comfort than most homestays offer. Meals are prepared using fresh local ingredients, and bathrobes are provided.

You can take part in activities like cooking classes, archery sessions, and cultural performances. There are also mermaid legends associated with the home, which the family can explain.

The location is convenient for Paro's main attractions, so it works well as a base if you want to explore the valley without staying in a hotel.

What to expect

Homestays in Bhutan are modestly equipped. Furnishings are simple, and the focus is on daily life rather than luxury. Wi-Fi may be slow, and sound insulation is minimal: you are staying in a real family home. If you're accustomed to five-star amenities, extensive facilities, or hotel-style service, this will feel basic. But if you value cultural immersion and warm hospitality over polish, these limitations are often what make the experience worthwhile.

When to book

During peak travel periods, especially around major tshechu festivals (March, April, September, October), demand is high. I recommend booking at least six months in advance to secure your preferred dates. Outside festival seasons there is more flexibility, but early planning is still wise if you want to stay here during the popular spring and autumn months.

Honestly, we didn't know what to expect before heading to Bhutan, but Guide and Driver made this trip an absolute 10/10 experience. From day one, they were so warm, friendly, and just genuinely excited to show us around their beautiful country.

We had an amazing experience with Druk Asia. From booking to arriving and leaving everything was organised brilliantly. We were provided with an excellent guide Kinley and our driver Sangay was amazing. We covered a huge distance and Sangay coped with rain, sleet, sunshine and more hair pin bends than I care to remember. Whilst Kinley was knowledgeable and understanding when we forgot what he'd said previously. Everything from accommodation, travel, food and water was looked after we didn't need to worry about anything.

Yeshey Dorji and our driver Tsering made our Bhutan trip absolutely memorable. From planning our daily itinerary based on our requirements to arranging a birthday cake to celebrate my wife's birthday, they have been instrumental in making the trip special. Service was absolutely seamless, and we did not have to worry about anything at all. Was sad to leave Bhutan at the end of the trip! 5/5
