Honestly, we didn't know what to expect before heading to Bhutan, but Guide and Driver made this trip an absolute 10/10 experience. From day one, they were so warm, friendly, and just genuinely excited to show us around their beautiful country.
Soi Yaksa Trek (Jomolhari Loop)
Eleven-day small group trek through Bhutan's Himalayan highlands
We designed the Soi Yaksa trek, also known as the Jomolhari Loop, for visitors who want a genuine high-altitude Bhutan trekking experience without committing to a multi-week expedition.
At 59 kilometres over eleven days, the route is demanding enough to feel earned but accessible to fit trekkers with no technical climbing background. The highest point is Bonte La Pass at 4,890 metres; from there the trail drops into the Soi Yaksa valley before a final descent through rhododendron forest to the road.
Our guides, porters and camp staff are all local Bhutanese and know this terrain personally. They travel with you for the full duration of the trek, reading conditions, adapting pace, and sharing knowledge about highland plants, wildlife, and yak herding culture that comes from growing up in these mountains. The itinerary includes a full acclimatisation day at Jangothang, a campsite with unobstructed views of Jomolhari, before the push to the pass.
The eleven days are not all trail. You arrive through Paro, spend time in Thimphu, hike to Taktsang Monastery, and return for a final night in Paro before departure. These pre- and post-trek days give the journey cultural context and a chance to settle into Bhutan's pace before the harder work begins.
All camping equipment is provided, including sleeping bags, mats, and blankets. A cook and horse handlers accompany the group throughout; horses carry kit and supplies so you trek with a day pack only. Groups are capped at ten people.

Detailed itinerary
What you'll see and do
Day 1 –2
Thimphu
Thimphu
You land at Paro International Airport with the Himalayas visible on the approach, then meet your guide for the drive to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital. The road follows a river valley and gives you an early sense of the landscape and the pace of daily life here. The evening is free to walk through town; Buddha Point is worth visiting after dark when Tashichho Dzong is lit up.
The following day is spent at a relaxed pace in Thimphu. You visit Buddha Point for a wide view over the city, the National Memorial Chorten, and the Motithang Takin Preserve, where Bhutan's unusual national animal is kept. Tashichho Dzong, the main administrative and religious complex, rounds out the day. This is also the time to check equipment and ask your guide anything before the trek begins.
Day 3 –4
Paro
Paro
After breakfast, you drive back to Paro through open valleys and traditional villages. The day covers Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples, Rinpung Dzong, and the National Museum. The afternoon is free, giving you time to prepare for the days ahead.
The following morning brings the hike to Taktsang Monastery - Tiger's Nest - perched on a cliff face above the valley floor. The trail climbs steadily through pine forest. After the hike, a traditional hot stone bath is arranged at the lodge: a practical way to loosen up before the trek starts the next day.
Day 5 –7
Shana to Jangothang
Jangothang (Jomolhari base camp)
Your trek begins with a drive to the trailhead at Shana. From here, the first day follows the Paro Chhu river through pine and rhododendron forest on a gradual trail - a manageable introduction to trekking at this altitude. You camp at Thangthangkha with your first clear views of snow-covered peaks.
The second trekking day continues up the valley as the landscape opens and the vegetation thins. You pass yak herder camps and small highland settlements before arriving at Jangothang, one of the most scenic campsites in Bhutan, with Jomolhari and Jichu Drakye directly in view.
The third day here is a rest and acclimatisation day. You can take short walks around the area for closer views of the peaks, or stay in camp and recover. It is also a chance to observe how your trekking crew works and to talk with your guide about the terrain ahead.
Day 8
Thangthangkha to Jangothang
Jangothang (Jomolhari base camp)
The trail continues along the valley, with the landscape becoming more open as you gain altitude. You’ll pass yak herder camps and small settlements along the way. By the time you reach Jangothang, you’re surrounded by high mountains, including views of Jomolhari. This is one of the most scenic campsites in Bhutan.
Day 9
Jangothang halt day
Jangothang (Jomolhari base camp)
This is an acclimatisation day to help your body adjust to the altitude. You can take short hikes around the area for even better views of Jomolhari and Jichu Drakye, or simply rest and enjoy the surroundings. It’s also a good chance to observe daily life in the highlands and interact with your trekking crew.
Day 10
Jangothang to Soi Yaksa via Bonte La Pass
Jangothang (Jomolhari base camp)
Today is one of the most rewarding days of the trek. You’ll cross Bonte La Pass at 4,890 metres, the highest point of the journey. The climb is steady, and the views from the top stretch across the Himalayan range. The descent brings you into the quiet Soi Yaksa valley, where you’ll camp for the night.
Day 11
Soi Yaksa to Thombu Shong via Takhung La
Jangothang (Jomolhari base camp)
The trail climbs again as you cross Takhung La Pass. This section offers wide views across valleys and ridgelines before descending through forest. Compared to the previous day, it feels more remote and less travelled. You’ll reach Thombu Shong, a peaceful campsite surrounded by nature.
Day 12
End of trek, Thombu Shong to Gunitsawa Village
Jangothang (Jomolhari base camp)
Your final trekking day takes you downhill through forest and along rivers back to Gunitsawa Village. From here, you’ll drive back to Paro. After several days in the mountains, the return to town feels comfortable, and you’ll have time to rest and enjoy a proper meal.
Day 13
Depart from Paro
Paro
Your journey comes to a close with a transfer to Paro International Airport. As you leave the valley, there’s time to reflect on the days you’ve spent in Bhutan, from quiet mountain trails to moments shared with your guides and crew. The landscapes stay with you, but so do the people and the pace of life you experienced here. We hope you leave with a deep sense of connection and many meaningful memories from your time in Bhutan.

We had an amazing experience with Druk Asia. From booking to arriving and leaving everything was organised brilliantly. We were provided with an excellent guide Kinley and our driver Sangay was amazing. We covered a huge distance and Sangay coped with rain, sleet, sunshine and more hair pin bends than I care to remember. Whilst Kinley was knowledgeable and understanding when we forgot what he'd said previously. Everything from accommodation, travel, food and water was looked after we didn't need to worry about anything.

Yeshey Dorji and our driver Tsering made our Bhutan trip absolutely memorable. From planning our daily itinerary based on our requirements to arranging a birthday cake to celebrate my wife's birthday, they have been instrumental in making the trip special. Service was absolutely seamless, and we did not have to worry about anything at all. Was sad to leave Bhutan at the end of the trip! 5/5
