Ama Dablam Expedition
The most technically demanding ascent in the Everest Region
The mighty Ama Dablam is a highly sought after peak for experienced mountaineers and alpinists. Known as the Matterhorn of Nepal, it is one of the most recognized mountains in the world, an iconic pyramid-shaped, snow-capped peak, standing at an elevation of 6,812 meters. Standing south of Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse deep in the Khumbu region of Koshi Province, Ama Dablam is the most technically demanding climb in the Everest region.
In Sherpa culture, this mountain is called "The Mother's Necklace" as the sharp ridges of the mountain resemble a mother's arms protecting and embracing her child. Likewise, the hanging glacier's shape resembles a Sherpa woman's traditional pendant, which has Buddhist deities' figures.
This infamous peak attracts climbers from all over the world who come for the famous Ama Dablam expedition. Summiting Ama Dablam requires scaling steep sections of rock and ice on completely exposed faces. Climbers must be accustomed to climbing at altitude and have advanced mountaineering skills and experience. Exposure on the steep faces also means there is no shelter, therefore the weather conditions must be perfect before attempting the ascent to the summit.

Day 1
Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to the hotel
Nepal
On arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, immigration procedures must be completed to obtain a Nepal Entry Visa. A representative will be waiting in the arrivals area for transfer to the hotel. The remainder of the day is free to rest or settle in after the journey.
Day 2
Welcome brief and official formalities in Kathmandu
Nepal
The day is dedicated to finalising logistics and obtaining necessary permits. Equipment is checked, supplies are organised, and any last-minute purchases are made, with particular attention to medical essentials and climbing gear. A detailed briefing covers the expedition plan, accommodation, base camp conditions, and safety protocols. This is also an opportunity to meet fellow climbers and team members. The remainder of the day can be used for personal preparation or exploring the city.
Day 3
Fly to Lukla from Kathmandu and trek to Phakding
Nepal
An early morning flight to Lukla offers sweeping aerial views of valleys, rivers, and the Himalayan foothills before landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport. From Lukla, the trek begins with a gradual descent towards Phakding, following a well-marked trail through small settlements and terraced landscapes. The route crosses several suspension bridges and runs alongside the Dudh Koshi River. Overnight in Phakding.
Day 4
Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
Nepal
The trail from Phakding ascends steadily towards Namche Bazaar, the main trading hub of the Khumbu region. The route winds through dense forests of pine, juniper, and rhododendron, with occasional glimpses of wildlife in Sagarmatha National Park. Suspension bridges span the Dudh Koshi River, and the final stretch involves a challenging uphill climb. Overnight in Namche.
Day 5
Rest in Namche Bazaar for Acclimatization
Nepal
A short ascent to Everest View Point (3,900m) provides a chance to adjust to the altitude while taking in panoramic mountain vistas. After descending back to Namche, there is the opportunity to visit the Sherpa Museum and Everest Photo Gallery for information about the region’s mountaineering history and Sherpa culture.
Day 6
Trek from Namche Bazaar to Deboche via Tengboche Monastery
Nepal
Leaving Namche Bazaar (3,440m), the trail descends through small settlements, including Sanasa, before reaching Phunki Tenga. The route includes a strenuous two-hour climb towards Tengboche. Several suspension bridges span the valley, offering views of the surrounding peaks. Upon arrival at Tengboche Monastery, there is time to explore before continuing the short descent to Debuche (3,820m), where the night is spent.
Day 7
Trek from Deboche to Ama Dablam Basecamp
Nepal
The trail leads towards Ama Dablam Base Camp (4,570m), crossing the Imja River via a suspension bridge before reaching Pangboche. From here, the route ascends through juniper forests and the thinning tree line, moving into a far more remote section of the Khumbu Valley. As elevation increases, expansive views open up, with Kangtega (6,783m), Thamserku (6,618m), and Taboche (6,542m) rising in the distance. The day ends in a remote yak pasture beneath the imposing face of Ama Dablam.
Day 8 –9
Rest Day for Acclimatization at Base Camp and Summarizing the Techniques
Nepal
With the trek to base camp complete, two days are set aside for rest and altitude adjustment before the ascent begins. Short acclimatisation hikes in the surrounding terrain help the body adapt, while climbing preparations and training sessions cover the use of mountaineering equipment, including fixed ropes and technical footwork on steep sections. These days provide an opportunity to refine skills and ensure readiness for the climb ahead.
Day 10 –17
Summit period of Ama Dablam
Nepal
Before the summit push, an acclimatisation rotation takes climbers from Base Camp to Camp I, a demanding ascent that takes approximately 5–6 hours. The route follows rugged terrain, including rocky ridges and snow-covered slopes. There are no glaciers or technical ice sections yet that require specialised footwear. Gaining elevation reveals clear views of Mt. Numbur, Cho Oyu, and Taweche. The night is spent at Camp I.
The next stage leads to Camp II, a challenging climb lasting 4–6 hours. Climbers use fixed ropes to navigate steep, exposed ridgelines, moving across boulder fields, snow-covered sections, and granite slabs. The ascent includes traversing the "Yellow Tower," an 80–90-degree rock face that presents the most technical challenge of the route. The route includes traversing boulders and snow, crossing granite slabs, and ascending scruffy buttresses.
Camp II, perched at 6,200m, is limited in space, accommodating only a handful of tents during peak seasons. After an overnight stay, the team descends to Base Camp for recovery.
The summit attempt follows, beginning with an early start and a steady climb past snowy slopes and mixed rock sections beyond Camp II. The final push to the summit of Ama Dablam (6,812m) is straightforward but physically demanding at altitude. After reaching the peak, climbers descend to Base Camp. The following day is reserved for clearing the site and preparing for departure.
Day 18 –20
Contingency Day at Ama Dablam Base Camp
Nepal
An additional day at Ama Dablam Base Camp is set aside for flexibility in the itinerary. This allows for adjustments in case of delays due to weather, altitude-related concerns, or other unforeseen circumstances. If not required, the day can be used for rest and further acclimatisation before the descent.
Day 21
Trek from Base Camp to Namche Bazaar
Nepal
Following the summit, the route leads back down through familiar terrain towards Namche Bazaar. The descent is steady, allowing time to recover from the climb. Upon arrival, the evening is spent in a comfortable lodge, marking a return to lower altitudes and a more relaxed pace.
Day 22
Trek from Namche to Lukla
Nepal
The final day on the trail begins early, following the familiar path along the Dudh Koshi River. The route passes through Monjo and Phakding, where a midday stop allows for a final meal on the trail. The afternoon walk is relatively gentle, with a few short ascents and descents before the final uphill stretch to Lukla. The journey concludes with an overnight stay in a lodge, offering a chance to reflect and celebrate with the team before departure.
Day 23
Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu and transfer to the hotel.
Nepal
A morning flight from Lukla marks the return to Kathmandu, offering a final aerial view of the mountains before landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in approximately 35 minutes. Upon arrival, a transfer is arranged to the hotel. The rest of the day is open for relaxation or optional sightseeing before the journey concludes.
Day 24
Free day in Kathmandu for Individual Activities
Nepal
A full day in Kathmandu allows time for rest, reflection, or personal exploration. Those interested can visit cultural sites in Kathmandu, Patan, or Bhaktapur, while others may choose to browse markets for souvenirs. The day is unstructured, offering flexibility before departure.
Day 25
Departure day/ Flight back to Home Country or next destination
Nepal
The journey concludes with a transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for the flight home or onward travel.
