Detailed itinerary

What you'll see and do

This is a customisable trip

Use the following itinerary for inspiration. Remember: all days, hotels and activities can be altered to suit your requirements. A Thunphel Bhutan Travels travel specialist will be happy to advise.

Your trek begins at the historic Wangdichholing Palace (2600m) in Bumthang, setting the stage for a journey steeped in royal heritage. The trail starts with a steady ascent toward Jakar Dzong, offering opportunities to explore this imposing fortress as well as the Wangdichholing Palace if time permits. Continuing upwards, you’ll make your way to Kikila Pass (3948m), where panoramic views reward your climb.

After trekking for approximately four and a half hours, you’ll arrive at Seou Zheysa, the very spot where Bhutan's Royal Family once paused for their mid-journey meals. Following lunch, the trail descends for three hours through serene landscapes, leading to your campsite at Makhagthang (2908m). Nestled beside the Duegang Chhu river and just a short walk from Domkhar Tashichholing Palace, this picturesque spot marks the perfect end to your first day.

Domkar – Jamsapang

The second day begins with a crossing of the Duegang Chhu, after which the trail transitions into a steady uphill climb. For about three and a half hours, you’ll ascend through rugged terrain, eventually reaching Dungmai Jab (3678m), where you’ll pause to enjoy lunch amidst tranquil surroundings.

The journey continues with another uphill trek lasting approximately two hours, leading you to Jamsapang (4019m), your campsite for the night. Located just a short distance from Tungli La Pass, this elevated spot offers a serene setting, surrounded by the grandeur of Bhutan’s mountain landscapes.

Jamsapang – Bjobshisa

Your day begins with a gentle ascent of about an hour to Tungli La Pass (4039m). From this vantage point, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Black Mountains, framed by Bhutan’s southern foothills to the left and the towering Himalayan range to the right—a truly mesmerising panorama.

From the pass, the trail descends gradually, and after a two-hour walk, you’ll stop for lunch in a peaceful spot along the route. Another two hours of trekking brings you to Bjobshisa, your campsite for the night. This area, used by local cattle herders during the summer and monsoon seasons, offers a rustic charm and a glimpse into traditional Bhutanese pastoral life.

Bjobshisa to Kuenga Rabten Palace

The final leg of your trek is a continuous descent, with the trail winding its way down to Kuenga Rabten Palace over the course of approximately four hours. Once the royal winter residence of Bhutan's Second King and his junior consort, this historic palace, perched at 1,774m, exudes an air of regal tranquility.

Behind the palace lies an idyllic camping ground that offers stunning views of the surrounding valley and the Mangdue River, making it a perfect spot to reflect on your journey through Bhutan’s rich cultural and natural tapestry.

I had the most wonderful time in Bhutan. Sonam and Phubra were the best guide and driver. This was my first ever solo travel and it was the best decision I made. They were so knowledgeable and they made sure of my safety at all times. The best part is the itinerary was catered according to my need and they understood my likes and dislikes! I am definitely coming to Bhutan again.

I visited Bhutan with a friend on 21 Apr to 1 May 2024. We took a package from Thunphel Bhutan Travel which provide us with a car, a driver and a tour guide. The itinerary was mostly planned by Kinley (thanks, boss) with few changes by us. We visited Paro, Bumthang, Ura, Trongsa, Phobjikha, Punakha & Thimphu which include witness the Ura Yagchoe festival, Simply Bhutan, National Institute of Traditional Arts and Craft, Royal Botanical Park, Royal Takin Preserve, Tiger's Nest hike, many temples, monastery, fortress where the tour guide was very patient to tell us the legendary stories, history, etc. Some of these places we visited include hiking/walking to reach there. I like to hike in a cool weather. We were impressed by ourselves that we managed to complete the Tiger's Nest hike which started from 7.20am to 3.30pm. Overall, no regret visiting Bhutan though it's expensive. Thanks Kinley, Sonam (Jack) & Lhabchu for the wonderful trip.
