Near Chiang Khan is a mountain, Phu Tok, from which you have views of the Mekong - and there's no need to hike thanks to the songthaews that truck travellers to the viewpoint. A glass-floor skywalk set over the confluence of the Mekong and Hueang rivers is a thrill.
