Emily from Wild Morocco

Emily

I first travelled to Morocco years ago to trek the Atlas mountains, but it was the Sahara desert and the warmth of its people that was a game changer for me, leading me to establish Wild Morocco with Yahya and we've never looked back!

Wild Morocco is an Amazigh-Anglo tour operator established in 2012 by Emily Burrows and Yahya Boulfrifi and we have become established as one of the leading and best-renowned Moroccan tour operators.

We initially offered remote, multi-day Sahara desert trekking with wild camping and camel caravans, later adding vehicle tours and our own fixed desert camp at Erg Chigaga, and a selection of special interest tours such as a photography workshop, and wildlife/birdlife trips.

Our expertise is knowing the best times of the year for light/shadow and astrophotography (for the photo tour), animal spotting/bird migrations (other special interest), and not forgetting where to set up our mobile wilderness camps to take our clients as far off the beaten track as possible during the hikes.

We operate through all of Morocco but the highlight for most of our visitors has to be the Sahara desert and I try to convey as far as possible how beautiful and diverse the region is - both fauna and flora in the desert which probably a lot of people aren't aware of.

What really elevates our business are the amazing people that we work with: our family of guides, drivers and porters, and of course the local communities with whom we have long established relationships, all of whom bring our trips to life and ensure that our guests are well looked after.

Moroccan hospitality is world-renowned and we'd love to share it with you – contact us now to discuss your plans.

Camp Al Koutban

We arrange Berber desert camping in Morocco at Camp Al Koutban (‘al koutban’ meaning dunes). The Al Koutban desert camp is located at the base of the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga. This is the longest erg (sand sea) in Morocco, and well off the beaten path in the Iriqui National Park. The camp is encircled by smaller, rolling dunes for privacy and shelter, which offer a great vantage point. The tallest dune in the Erg Chigaga is a round-hike of 90 minutes from the desert camp and is a compelling place to watch sunset.

Private Nomadic Camp

A private desert camp in the remote dunes, to the east of Erg Chigaga great dunes. Two hours off-road drive from civilisation. The stay at the private Nomadic camp can be combined with a tailor-made tour or a bespoke self-drive adventure in Morocco.

Designed to accommodate a couple, group of friends or a family looking for total escape and exploration, yet in comfort and style, the private desert camp is sheltered by dunes and will comfortably sleep up to 9 people, in four spacious tents. You will not see any other camps in the area. There is plenty of outdoor space for relaxation on cushions, or in hammocks, and the largest dune that overlooks the camp is ideal for enjoying sunset and sunrise (which are an integral part of the desert experience).

Deluxe Camp Erg Chigaga

The deluxe desert camp at Erg Chigaga dunes offers barefoot luxury at every level and retains the spirit of the culture of the Sahara Desert. It is run exclusively by a local team who all originate from the area. The team are true professionals and know how to make everything run as seamlessly as possible in tough desert conditions. Service is relaxed and friendly, and special requests are catered for.

The attention to detail is important; each spacious guest tent is replete with private, en-suite bathroom tent with toiletries, and fully-furnished sumptuous bedrooms completed with wall-to-wall rugs, armchairs, mirrors, lamps, and the finest bed linens. All the furniture is hand-made. There is even a well-stocked bar/salon at the camp, cosy outside relaxation areas, hammocks and a telescope. Electricity is provided in the guest tents in the evenings via solar power.

We would like to thank you for amazing trip through Morocco. It was terrific experience to drive across the country especially Dades Valley, Dra Valley and Atlas Mountains. We could discover not only picturesque places but also wonderful kitchen at Dar Rihana - Dades Gorges- unforgettable dishes! We finished our wonderful travel at Sahara Erg Chigaga dunes with camel trekking and sunset on the desert which was the most spectacular feeling ever. Never seen before such true horizon of dark sky full of stars. All these adventures couldn’t be done without our experienced driver Khalid who not only showed us interesting places, described the history of Morocco but he was a great companion along the trip. Thank you, we will keep this in our memory!

We took our family (we, 2 adult children with American partners) on a 6 day tour into the desert. It was a fantastic tour. Everything was super well organized, the guides and drivers were extremely competent, nice and reliable and really explained the country to us like good friends. The food was fantastic, the best omelette I ever ate was in the middle of the desert. The cars and equipment were in perfect condition and we didn't even feel that something was not going optimally.
We have done several tours of Africa, this was by far the easiest and best organized tour. We enjoyed every second and were very sad when we had to go back from the desert to civilization.
We are sure we will come back again and make the long desert crossing on foot
Thanks to the whole team!

From the beginning to the end our journey to the Sahara with Wild Morocco was incredible. Their thoughtful and authentic itinerary made our trip unforgettable. Our tour guide, Miki from Wild Morocco, was simply the best we could ask for. He is very experienced with the route, has so much knowledge to share and clearly cares deeply about his job and the community. We could not imagine our trip without him. Many thanks!

I heard about Wild Morocco through a friend and booked the trip. M'hamid is not the easiest place in the world to get to, but WM were extremely helpful with adivising planes/buses/taxis/hostels etc.

The trip itself was phenomenal. Omar and Omar, two bedouins born and bred in the desert took myself and my mother across the dunes for three days, showing us a real nomad experience. Whether it was making fresh bread in the sand, singing nomad songs around the campfire, or showing us where to find fresh rocket in the desert, they were constantly suprising us.

The journey felt very authentic, we were alone with the Omars trekking through the desert and living in the elements, walking with the camels and sleeping under the stars. The pair managed to make the trek very comfortable and my mother, who is sixty, was well able for the trip, largely due to how friendly and helpful the pair were.
