Nowhere does wilderness quite like Scotland. From the vast and sparsely populated Highlands to its many remote islands, Scotland is the perfect place to go hiking or biking, with the chance to see eagles in mountain lochs, whales near the Isle of Mull and seals off the Outer Hebrides.

That’s not to say that Scotland is without culture. This is the country that gave the world the poetry of Robert Burns, the comedy and art of the Edinburgh Festival and plenty of music. Yes, it might be stereotyped for tartan kilts, shortbread and whisky, but there is much more depth to Scotland than you might imagine.

This extends to the food. Scotland is home to some of the world’s finest seafood, beef and venison and its best restaurants have an affinity for locally-grown produce. Many a tourist come to tour its whisky distilleries and they offer the perfect taste of Scotland – rich, boozy and complex.

So head to Scotland for its outdoor beauty, famous mountains and isolated islands, but really get to know her for her food, culture and welcome.
