Combining Machu Picchu with the Galapagos is a journey for those who love to explore—really explore. You’ll be stepping into places where history, culture, and nature all blend seamlessly, creating an experience that’s less about sightseeing and more about feeling the soul of the landscapes.

You’ll start in Peru’s glorious Sacred Valley, where the air feels a little crisper, the mountains tower just a bit higher, and life moves at a pace that lets you really soak it all in. You’ll wander through ancient terraces and storied villages. There's a peacefulness in the valley, a sense that time has slowed down just enough for you to catch your breath.

Then, of course, it's on to Machu Picchu. The train ride up is its own experience—mountain peaks wrapped in mist, the sense of anticipation building as you get closer. And when you finally see it, Machu Picchu feels almost dreamlike, cradled by the mountains, as if it was always meant to be hidden away. Walking through the ruins, you get this incredible mix of awe and calm, like you’re part of something much bigger, and yet, it’s a very personal moment.

After Peru, your journey shifts gears as we head to Ecuador's Galápagos Islands. Here, nature takes centre stage. It’s one of those rare places on Earth where animals haven’t learned to fear humans, so everything feels a bit like a conversation between you and the wild. The islands are alive in the purest sense, and the experience is quietly transformative.

This isn’t a rushed tour. It’s about taking the time to simply be in these extraordinary places—listening, watching, feeling. By the end, you’ll have memories that go beyond the photos, moments where you felt deeply connected to the world in a way that’s hard to put into words.

A trip with Wayfairer isn't about ticking off bucket-list destinations. It’s about letting the landscapes speak for themselves, and letting yourself be moved by them.

What you'll see and do

This is a customisable trip

Use the following itinerary for inspiration. Remember: all days, hotels and activities can be altered to suit your requirements. A Wayfairer travel specialist will be happy to advise.

Arrival to Lima

After landing in Lima, Peru’s vibrant coastal capital, you'll be welcomed by our local representative who will ensure a smooth transfer from the airport to your hotel.

Your home for the night is Villa Barranco, a boutique hotel tucked away in one of the city's most charming, artistic neighborhoods. This restored 1920s mansion offers an intimate retreat, blending classic design with modern comfort. You’ll be staying in a Deluxe Room, where thoughtful details and warm tones create a calm, welcoming space—perfect after a long journey.

Once settled in, the rest of the day is yours to relax and unwind. You might want to take a quiet stroll through Barranco’s streets, where colorful murals and artisan shops line the way, or simply enjoy the evening breeze on the hotel’s rooftop terrace.

Featured Accommodation
Walking tour of Barranco & City tour of Lima

A journey full of art, culture, and flavour awaits us in Lima's bohemian neighbourhood of Barranco. As we explore its streets, we’ll see echoes of its colonial and republican past, especially along the Saenz Peña Boulevard, known for its old Gothic-influenced houses. As we wander deeper into Barranco, we’ll discover its colourful, picturesque homes, many of which have been transformed into artist workshops and galleries. Among these are the studios of renowned artists Jade Rivera and Victor Delfin, where we’ll step inside to admire their work and see unique pieces firsthand.

Barranco's energy can be felt on its scenic boardwalk, which offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Strolling along the path, we’ll arrive at the iconic Bridge of Sighs, or 'Puente de los Suspiros,' a beloved landmark that has inspired legends, songs, and poetry. The famous Peruvian singer Chabuca Granda dedicated one of her most well-known songs to this spot, and we’ll stop to admire a sculpture honouring her.

As we make our way to the district’s main square, vibrant murals will line our path, perfect for snapping some photos. Our journey takes a delicious turn at El Cacaotal, a haven for chocolate and coffee lovers, where we can enjoy a drink and learn about the exceptional quality of Peruvian coffee and cocoa. For those interested in local crafts, we’ll also visit a few artisan shops to find a meaningful souvenir before concluding our adventure in Barranco.

In the afternoon we'll venture into downtown Lima: its modern pulse in the districts of Miraflores and San Isidro, and its historic soul found in the UNESCO-designated city center. As we travel through these different neighborhoods, you’ll see how the old and new coexist seamlessly in buildings like the Museum of Italian Art, the Palace of Justice, and the Museum of Lima, as well as in open spaces like Plaza San Martín.

We’ll take our time discovering Lima’s historic heart on foot, with the Main Square as our focal point. This picturesque colonial plaza, perfect for photos, is surrounded by some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Government Palace, the grand Cathedral, and the Archbishop’s Palace. Our journey will lead us inside one of Lima’s most significant religious sites, the Convent of Santo Domingo, another World Heritage site. Here, we’ll encounter the relics of three of Peru’s beloved saints—Santa Rosa de Lima, San Martín de Porres, and San Juan Macías.

After taking in Lima’s historic layers, we’ll return to the modern side of the city, where the Pacific Ocean offers a breathtaking backdrop. We’ll visit the Park of Love, a serene green space overlooking the ocean, home to the famous sculpture by Peruvian artist Victor Delfín. It’s the perfect spot to pause, reflect, and take in the view before wrapping up the day.

Flight from Lima to Cusco

After breakfast the journey continues as your driver accompanies us from the hotel to Lima’s airport for a short flight to Cusco, the gateway to the Sacred Valley. As we ascend, the landscapes begin to change—the bustling coastline of Lima gives way to the stunning peaks of the Andes, a preview of what’s to come.

Upon arriving in Cusco, you'll be met by another representative who will ensure a seamless transfer to your hotel. We spend the first night in the Sacred Valley, at a lower altitude to Cusco, to give you a chance to acclimatise. The rest of the day is yours to relax. You might choose to rest at your hotel or take a gentle stroll to breathe in the fresh mountain air and get a feel for your new surroundings.

You’ll be staying at Las Qolqas Eco-Resort, a tranquil hideaway nestled in the Sacred Valley. Surrounded by nature, this eco-friendly retreat is designed to blend into the landscape, offering a quiet, peaceful environment where you can recharge after the day’s travels.

Cultural immersion in Misminay

This enriching experience begins in the community of Misminay and will allow us to enjoy a valuable immersive cultural exchange, as well as learn about the traditional Andean lifestyle. Located an hour outside the city of Cusco, in a stunning mountainous setting in the heart of the Sacred Valley, Misminay preserves the culture of the ancestors who inhabited the Andes at the time of the Incas. Upon arrival, the community members will welcome us with their characteristic warmth amidst music and typical dances. We can take part in some of the different traditional daily activities according to our particular interests related to construction, cooking, or working in the fields. Besides, we will have the opportunity to learn about their millenary textile art or take a walk to a nearby viewpoint before enjoying a delicious lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients. It will be a day of great experiential learning!

Full Day Andean Forests

We will start off this adventure heading to the Ollantaytambo ruins. Here you’ll explore a truly impressive archaeological complex, one of the largest in Peru, which is strategically located on top of a mountain and once guarded the road to Machu Picchu. We continue with a visit to Pumamarka, about one hour from Ollantaytambo, where we’ll visit the Pumamarka Ruins, which are believed to have been part of the Wari and Inca empires, and are in one of the less visited areas of the Sacred Valley. From there we’ll visit the Choquechaka Conservation Area to learn about Andean Forests and their ecosystems. After exploring these sites and learning about their significance, we’ll enjoy a traditional Pachamanca lunch at the El Albergue Farm’s restaurant. There is the option to finish the tour with a visit to El Albergue’s distillery and coffee roaster before returning to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

Short Inca Trail ("Two Day" / KM104 trek) to Machu Picchu

We will leave Ollantaytambo on board the train to Machu Picchu until kilometere 104 of the railway. From this point, we will start the hike to the Wiñay Wayna complex, surrounded by exceptional landscapes on the banks of the Urubamba River. Wiñay Wayna was a special site on the Inca Trail route, fulfilling a religious and agricultural role. Its constructive style is similar to Machu Picchu, standing out for its impressive terraces on the mountainside. We will have time to walk around it and encounter the abundant flora of the place - among which orchids stand out - before lunch. We will resume our hike on the Inca Trail through lush vegetation towards Inti Punku, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Crossing the Sun Gate is a unique experience, the perfect reward after the arduous hike. We will enter Machu Picchu, leave the citadel, and board the bus that will take us to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) to renew our energies.

Guided tour of Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is pure magic, and today, we will have the opportunity to visit it accompanied by our expert guide. Built in the 15th century by the Inca Pachacutec, the citadel is an amazing example of Inca architectural knowledge and ability to adapt to the rugged Andean environment. Our guided tour will take us through the principal enclosures inside the llaqta while learning about the history, organisation, and importance this World Wonder had during the Tahuantinsuyo. We will explore its internal terraces and temples with the impressive backdrop of the Huayna Picchu mountain. At the end of the tour, we will return by bus to Aguas Calientes to await the departure of our train back to Cusco. Overnight at Quinta San Blas by Ananay Hotels.

Full day city tour of Cusco

This fascinating tour of Cusco, also known as the Imperial City of the Incas, will give you insights into the city’s history, the daily life of its people, and its importance for the Andean region. We begin at the city’s iconic local market— for local people, the city’s real, beating heart— where we’ll have the chance to explore the colours, flavours, and traditions of a modern yet traditional Cusco. We’ll then continue to the Koricancha, also known as the Golden Temple, the most important temple in the Inca Empire and the centre of worship of Inti, the Sun God. Although the Spanish Dominican order built a church on top of the original temple, the Koricancha foundations and stonework are still visible.

Leaving this Inca temple, we continue to the fortress of Sacsayhuaman. Built with massive blocks of stone, this imposing example of Inca military architecture is located on the outskirts of the city. From here, we’ll continue on foot along picturesque cobblestoned streets, enjoying panoramic views of the city, passing by the Sapantiana “Huaca” and the Colonial Aqueduct, and through the famous artisan neighbourhood of San Blas on our way down to the Plaza de Armas (main square), where we’ll visit the Cathedral, the city’s most important church. You can then return to your hotel or, if you choose, stay in the Historic Centre and continue exploring at your own pace.

Overnight at Quinta San Blas by Ananay Hotels.

The collaborative efforts of the National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Station focus on restoring the populations of different tortoise species, tailored to the unique ecosystems of each island.

After our enlightening visit to the research station, you will have some free time to explore the nearby town. This is a wonderful opportunity to shop for unique souvenirs that capture the spirit of the Galapagos.

Featured Accommodation
Voyage to Isabela Island

Morning: White-Tipped Reef Shark Canal & Sierra Negra Volcano (Isabela Island)

Our day begins with a boat ride through the pristine waters, searching for the iconic blue-footed boobies, pelicans, herons, and Galapagos penguins. This adventure leads us to a dry landing, where we’ll embark on a loop trail around a small islet formed by volcanic uplift. This area is home to one of the eleven sub-species of marine iguanas, including baby marine iguanas, along with lava lizards, Galapagos sea lions, and yellow warblers. A highlight of our exploration will be the Tintoreras channel, named for the white-tipped reef sharks that can often be seen resting on the bottom.

Next, we’ll set our sights on Sierra Negra, the largest and shallowest elliptical caldera among the Galapagos volcanoes, measuring 60 to 40 km wide and 7 to 10 km in length. Although often regarded as the second-largest caldera in the world, it still ranks among the fifty largest on our planet. The caldera has experienced various episodes of collapse, upheaval, and deformation, making it a fascinating geological site. Our journey will take us to Puerto Villamil, where we’ll hop on a bus for a ride up to the slopes of Sierra Negra volcano. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes and bring a light rain jacket, as we prepare for an unforgettable hike.

Afternoon: Wetlands tour (Isabela Island)

After a dry landing on the jetty, we’ll enjoy a short five-minute bus ride to the Jacinto Gordillo breeding center, where we can observe Galapagos giant tortoises at various stages of their life cycle. This unique breeding program is dedicated to preserving the tortoises native to Isabela Island. Following this, we’ll explore an interior trail that winds through a lush mangrove forest and wetlands, where we’ll have the chance to spot flamingos, herons, marine iguanas, and various migratory birds.

Our trail culminates in front of a beautiful beach, offering some free time to enjoy the stunning views. The nearby village is also worth a visit, allowing you to immerse yourself further in the local culture and charm of Isabela Island.

Exploring Isabela Island

Morning: Punta Moreno (Isabela Island)

Our adventure begins with a wet landing on the striking lava field of Punta Moreno, where we’ll embark on a long walk amidst captivating volcanic formations, providing an excellent opportunity for photographers to capture the stunning landscapes. Here, you’ll find two distinct types of lava flows: Pahoehoe and ‘aa’. Pahoehoe lava features a billowy, ropy surface that appears almost smooth and soft, with fresh flows displaying a paper-thin, shiny black glass crust that reflects light in iridescent hues. In contrast, the cooler ‘aa’ lava is more pasty and stiff, fracturing as it moves forward to create a rugged, rubbly surface.

As we traverse the trail over the bare lava, we may encounter lagoons that attract flamingos and various wading birds, adding to the natural beauty of the landscape. Our exploration will also include a boat ride, where we’ll search for the largest marine iguanas, Galapagos penguins, flightless cormorants, pelicans, and blue-footed boobies. For those seeking adventure, there will be an opportunity for deep-water snorkeling off the zodiac, revealing the vibrant underwater world of the Galapagos.

Afternoon: Elizabeth Bay (Isabela Island)

In the afternoon, we’ll head to Elizabeth Bay, located on the western side of Isabela Island. Here, the use of outboard motors is forbidden, allowing us to glide quietly through the serene waters on our boat. Surrounded by lush red mangrove trees, we’ll observe the rich marine life below, including spotted eagle rays, golden rays, sea turtles, and flightless cormorants. This area serves as a natural mating ground for sea turtles, and our quiet paddling will help us avoid disturbing the wildlife.

As we approach the Marielas Islets, located just off the visitor side, we’ll encounter the largest colony of Galapagos penguins, along with large marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and brown pelicans. The combination of stunning scenery and unique wildlife will leave you with unforgettable memories of this remarkable location.

Voyage to Fernandina Island

Morning: Punta Espinoza (Fernandina Island)

We begin our day at Punta Espinoza, situated on Fernandina Island, the youngest of the Galapagos Islands and recognised as the best-preserved island in the world, free from introduced species. Over the past 50 years, Fernandina has experienced more than ten volcanic eruptions, which have significantly shaped its landscape; notably, Punta Espinoza was uplifted by 90 cm in 1975. Here, you will find coral reefs and mangrove roots, which are exposed to the strong tides that make survival challenging for many species.

The biodiversity in Fernandina is remarkable, with a variety of wildlife including Galapagos hawks, two species of rodents, a unique species of snake, lava lizards, flightless cormorants, and playful Galapagos sea lions—often spotted frolicking in the intertidal pools. As we explore, you may also see the vibrant Sally Lightfoot crabs and the iconic marine iguanas that are native to these islands. For an extraordinary underwater experience, we will have the opportunity to snorkel off the zodiac, a rare chance to observe marine iguanas and sea turtles as they feed on seaweed. Witness the flightless cormorants, which exhibit remarkable adaptations for diving, showcasing their strong muscles in their feet and legs that allow for high-speed underwater foraging.

Afternoon: Tagus Cove

In the afternoon, we will visit Tagus Cove, located on the northwestern side of Isabela Island. After a dry landing, we’ll ascend a wooden stairway that leads us to the site’s namesake, inspired by the British vessel “Tagus,” whose sailors once left their mark with graffiti on the cliffs surrounding the cove—a practice that the National Park Service has since curtailed. Our trail takes us to Darwin’s salt-water crater lake, where we can relish excellent views of the surrounding lava fields and striking volcanic formations.

Upon our return, we’ll embark on a scenic boat ride along the coastline, rich with marine wildlife. During this leisurely journey, keep an eye out for blue-footed boobies, brown noddies, and the charming Galapagos penguins, which stand at only 35 cm tall. This species is unique as the only penguin found within the tropics, with a small population residing in the northern hemisphere; an impressive 95% of them live on the western shores of Isabela and Fernandina islands. For those eager to explore the underwater world further, Tagus Cove offers excellent snorkeling opportunities, where you can search for sea turtles and observe flightless cormorants in their natural habitat.

San Cristobal and departure

Morning: Isla Lobos (San Cristobal)

We’ll start our day with an early visit to Isla Lobos, a charming little island located just off the coast of Port Baquerizo Moreno. As we approach the landing site, we’ll be greeted by a large colony of Galapagos sea lions, their playful barks echoing in the air. The trail takes us through a semi-desertic area, where we can observe blue-footed boobies nesting on the ground and frigatebirds perched in the trees above. The island's unique vegetation is characterised by black mangrove trees, saltbush, and holly stick, all contributing to the distinctive landscape.

After our exploration of this vibrant ecosystem, you'll be transferred to the airport for their return flight to Guayaquil or Quito, taking with you unforgettable memories of the Galapagos Islands.

From here it's your international flight home, or possibly onwards to explore the rest of Ecuador. Contact us now to tailor this itinerary!

What people are saying about Wayfairer

What started out as a disaster at the airport, not letting us board because certain papers were not supplied, we went back home, and next day called Wayfairer. They had so personally helped us set up the itinerary with all that we wanted to see, and they had to start all over again. With flying colors Wayfairer came through without extra money to lay out. The trip was one of the best ever, all falling into place. Definitely we shall call on Wayfaire again.

Superbly arranged holiday by Wayfairer Travel. Their knowledge and experience meant they picked superb and very different locations for us, all of which complimented each other but gave vastly different experiences. By booking through Wayfairer it meant we never had to think about any travel arrangements outside getting to our local airport! Would recommend anyone booking this type of holiday to book through them.
