We really appreciated that this trek started a little later in the day, and we had the pleasure of the Vinikunka peak and walk back, nearly entirely to ourselves. What a privilege! This also speaks to an appreciation of the local challenges of overtourism, and their conscientious approach. William, our guide, was also extraordinarily patient with us, given that one of our group struggled with the altitude more than the rest. He was attentive and encouraging, while managing us in a quiet and confident manner. His knowledge and interest was apparent and we enjoyed his company very much. The Apus Peru team's communication was also excellent, and we appreciated the tailored offering they put together for us. We would highly recommend the company and tour to others!
Lares Trek & Machu Picchu
The 'cultural trek' four day itinerary
A Peru trekking highlight, the Lares Valley trek combines high Andean trekking with a chance for genuine interaction with locals in a remote village.
Technically speaking there are many 'Lares Treks' in and around the Lares Valley; this itinerary is totally unique to Apus Peru getting you off the beaten track. We have worked in community development in the Lares Valley communities since 2007, including supporting the local school. As a result, we have a very close relationship with the people there, many of whom work as part of our trek staff, from porters to cooks to muleteers. Apus Peru’s sister non-profit organization, Threads of Peru, also works with the weavers of Chaullacocha. Travelers who hike any Lares Valley Trek with Apus Peru often get a chance to visit the school and the weaving association – this is a totally different experience than the average Lares trek!
Customise this trip!
All Apus Peru treks are organised in private groups, which means the itinerary can be tweaked to suit your preferences. We can tailor this hike to add additional days in Lares or elsewhere. We highly recommend pairing the Lares Trek with the Two Day Inca Trail, which arrives at Machu Picchu on foot just like the Inca!

What you'll see and do
This is a customisable trip
Use the following itinerary for inspiration. Remember: all days, hotels and activities can be altered to suit your requirements. A Apus Peru travel specialist will be happy to advise.
Day 1
Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Chaullacocha
Cusco

- Total Walking Distance: 10km
- Total Walking Time: 6h
- Minimum Altitude: 4000m (13,123 ft) / Maximum Altitude: 4430m (14,534 ft)
- Altitude of camp: 4100m (13,451 ft)
- Approx. night temperature: –10°C (14°F)
We leave Cusco early and head to Ollantaytambo, a charming Inca town with stone buildings and cobblestone streets. If you miss breakfast at your hotel, there’s time to grab a bite or a morning coffee here before starting our trek. From Ollantaytambo, we drive about an hour to the Palqaq trailhead (3900m / 12,795 ft) for the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu.
The trek begins with a 5-hour hike to Chaullacocha Pass (4430m / 14,534 ft), offering stunning views of mountains, alpacas, and the lake that gives the community its name. We then descend to Chaullacocha village (4121m / 13,520 ft) for lunch.
Apus Peru has a special connection to Chaullacocha, where many of our porters live. Since 2007, we’ve supported community projects here, including a weaving association through Threads of Peru. During our visit, we may stop at the local school to observe lessons, depending on timing and the group. Note: schools are closed on weekends, holidays, and Fridays. Check your itinerary and read our Responsible Tourism guidelines.
For a unique experience, consider a Chaullacocha Homestay to spend the night with a traditional Andean family!
Day 2
Chaullacocha – Maranniyoq
Lares Valley

- Total Walking Distance: 12km
- Total Walking Time: 8hs
- Minimum Altitude: 4000m (13,123 ft) / Maximum Altitude: 4440m (14,566 ft)
- Altitude of camp: 4000m / 13,123 ft
- Approx. night temperature: -10°C (14°F)
We start early today, covering significant distance. A 1.5-hour climb brings us to Meloq’asa Pass (4440m / 14,566 ft), where the vegetation begins to change. After 3-4 hours of trekking along the mountain’s edge with stunning views, we’ll stop for lunch by the river. Following a rest, we descend for 2 hours (500m / 1,640 ft) to our campsite at Maranniyoq, where we’ll spend the night.
Day 3
Maranniyoq – Lares Hot Springs – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes
Machu Picchu

- Total Walking Distance: 8km
- Total Walking Time: 3h
- Minimum Altitude: 3300m (10,826 ft) / Maximum Altitude: 4000m (13,123 ft)
From our campsite, we’ll spot the town of Lares (3300m / 10,826 ft), our first stop today. After breakfast, we hike over undulating terrain along the ravine to the Lares hot springs. Here, we’ll relax with a rejuvenating dip before having lunch. Our driver will then take us on a 3-hour drive to Ollantaytambo, where we’ll catch the train to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, we’ll check into our accommodations and enjoy a celebratory dinner before heading to bed for an early start tomorrow.
If time, pace, and weather permit, we can extend the day by 2-3 hours to visit the Huaman Marka archaeological site.
Day 4
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
Cusco

After an early breakfast, we take a pre-dawn bus to Machu Picchu to watch the sunrise from the Watchman’s Hut (Guardhouse). Your guide will lead a 2-3 hour guided walking tour of the citadel.
For those feeling adventurous, you can hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, but note that these require extra permits, which sell out quickly. Let us know at booking if you’d like to add one of these hikes.
After exploring Machu Picchu, return to Aguas Calientes by bus or on foot. From there, we take the Expedition train to Ollantaytambo, where our driver will transfer you to your Cusco hotel. The journey from Aguas Calientes to Cusco takes about 4 hours.

The trek around the Ausangate massive proved to be even better than expected. Apus has a very professional organisation which shows quality in all aspects. Sustainability and fair payment to its employees. We fully enjoyed the trek and was treated as king and queen by the guide Herbert, the chef Mauro and the two horsemen. Fantastic meals and even cake at the last breakfast !
Herbert could tell a lot of what we saw under ways and had allways an answer. Super flexible and constantly high spirits.

We had an amazing 5-day, 4-night Inca trail trek with Apus Peru and their guide Mario (and their porters). I’d give 10 stars if possible. They are great with kids (our son is 9), and truly were caring, knowledgeable, and provided the best experience possible. A++ in every way.
