Experience some of the best wildlife and landscapes that Kenya has to offer without travelling more than a few hours out of Nairobi. Start in the capital with a mood-boosting visit to one of its baby elephant sanctuaries before heading north to the country’s highest mountain, Mount Kenya, and view this dramatic landscape as you soar above the peaks in a helicopter. From here, travel west to Lake Nakuru. Here you’ll see a huge range of wildlife and, if you’re lucky, its famous colourful carpet of pink flamingoes feeding in the lake.

Take a helicopter over Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and second highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro, and a great way to view this dramatic landscape is by helicopter. Fly over the mountain’s snow-capped peaks and stop off for refreshments at one of its beautiful alpine lakes.

Lake Nakuru safari

Go on a Rift Valley safari at one of Kenya’s smallest but best-kept reserves. The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife including the rare Rothschild giraffe, endangered rhinos and, when conditions are right, the amazing spectacle of hundreds of thousands of pink flamingoes feeding at Lake Nakuru, the park’s focal point.

Feed a baby elephant at a Nairobi sanctuary

Many trips to Kenya start and finish in its largest city and capital, Nairobi. For a shot of cuteness, visit one of its wildlife sanctuaries to see baby elephants — many of which are orphaned due to poachers — feeding and playing happily in the mud.
