Start in Trebinje, a pretty town similar to Dubrovnik but without the costs and tourists, before beginning your walking trip with the deep gorges of the Tara Canyon. It’s a short jump to Durmitor National Park, home to underground streams and more than 50 peaks – perfect for hiking in summer or skiing in winter. Travel to Biogradska Gora National Park, where you can explore ancient forests full of elm, maple and beech trees, before heading to the Balkans’ biggest lake – Lake Skadar. Here, you can see Albania across the water and look for pelicans on the Montenegrin side. An hour’s drive away is Lovcen National Park, where you can see orchids before climbing to the mountain-top mausoleum to St Peter – Montenegro’s most famous son. Travel down the mountain to the Bay of Kotor to explore its waterfront villages before ending in Dubrovnik.

Day 1–2 in Trebinje

Just 30km from Dubrovnik, Trebinje is a worthwhile alternative to Croatia’s classic destination, with a walled Old Town, mountain views and a river complete with swimming spots.

Nestled in the serene valley of the Trebišnjica River, the town makes for an interesting diversion. The charming city, often overlooked by mainstream tourism, offers a tranquil retreat with its rich history and picturesque landscapes. The Old Town, a mosaic of ancient stone buildings and cobblestone streets, leads you to the iconic Ottoman-era Arslanagić Bridge, a symbol of Trebinje's enduring heritage.

In the heart of the is the lively Trebinje Market, with Herzegovinian honey and artisan cheeses on offer. For a panoramic city view, a visit to the Hercegovačka Gračanica Monastery, perched atop Crkvina Hill, is a must.

Day 3 in Tara Canyon

Found on the northern edge Durmitor National Park, the Tara Canyon cuts deep into the landscape, with its deepest point being only 200m less than the Grand Canyon.

The Tara River flows through the base of the canyon and you can explore the waters by rafting or kayaking. Cycle along the river or admire the views from the top of Mount Curevac. The impressive bridge across the valley is also worth visiting.

Day 4 in Durmitor National Park

Home to more than 50 peaks, mountain rivers and underground streams, the dramatic Durmitor National Park is Montenegro’s adventure playground.

In winter, the mountains offer ample skiing opportunities while or head out of season for hiking, kayaking and rafting. The are attracts a lot of visitors meaning hiking trails are well sign-posted and you can make your way to the peak of the countries highest peak, Bobotov Kuk.

The Tara River runs through the park with an impressive bridge that's worth a visit as well as being a popular area for rafting.

Day 5–6 in Biogradska Gora National Park

Peaceful Biogradska Gora is best-known for its primeval forest, where you can spot ancient beech, maple, elm and juniper trees — some of which are more than 500 years old. There are fantastic hiking opportunities, including a full-day hike crossing the Bjelasica mountain range, which is characterised by rounded volcanic mountain tops, forested valleys and meadows filled with wild globeflowers and orchids.

Venture by car 1 hour 20 minutes to a village close to the border with Serbia, where you can walk along the Bistrica river and gradually ascend to the remote 17th century frescoed monastery of St Nikola.

Day 7–8 in Lake Skadar National Park

The route south follows the Morača river where you can visit the eponymous 13th century Orthodox monastery, known for its outstanding Byzantine frescoes. Continue on towards Lake Skader for lunchtime.

Skadar is the Balkans largest lake, with two-thirds sitting in Montenegro and the rest in Albania. The surrounding national park is the perfect place to escape the heat of the city, with awe-inspiring mountains, island monasteries and pretty villages. Look for rare Dalmatian pelicans on the lake’s water – the world’s heaviest flying bird.

Day 9 in Lovćen National Park

Located in the Dinara Alps, Lovćen National Park incorporates a range of habitats with a variety of plant and animal species residing in the park.

Lovćen National Park is most famous for the towering mausoleum of St Peter at the Jezerski vrh peak, but it’s worth exploring the park adventure activities, from ziplining and quad-biking for thrill-seekers to hiking and cycling for the more sedate.

Day 10 in Bay of Kotor

Montenegro is a country full of beautiful views, but the Bay of Kotor’s waterfront might just be the best.

Spend a couple of days meandering through its towns, from the restored palaces of Perast to Kotor’s Venetian old town with sites including the three city gates, town square and clock tower, but the highlight is the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon. Nowhere combines ancient history and stunning scenery better.

An UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bay of Kotor's winding coastline offers ample opportunities for hikers and bikers, with quiet roads generally devoid of traffic. Head up to the observation deck at Tivat for panoramic views of the bay and hike the 1300 steps to the Kotor Fortress.

Day 11 in Dubrovnik

Drive along the coast to cross the border into Croatia en route to Dubrovnik airport, where you can board an onward flight or extend your trip in the Balkans.

The jewel in Croatia’s crown, Dubrovnik might just be one of the most picturesque cities in the world. Explore the city’s ancient city walls and historic building, head up the hills to Mount Srd and dip your toes in the Adriatic Sea.
