This epic journey through the legendary Khumbu region to Mount Everest Base Camp is one of the world's classic treks. Calling at Namche Bazaar, Kala Patthar and Tengboche Monastery, the route winds through spectacular scenery around four of the world's six highest peaks: Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, and Cho-Oyu. Suitable for novices with no previous experience required, the hike to Everest Base Camp is a life-defining experience. Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

What you'll see and do


You will be met at Kathmandu airport and taken to your hotel. In the afternoon there will be a pre-trip discussion where you'll meet your trek leader and the rest of your group. This is the perfect opportunity to ask any questions and get ready for the big departure.

Kathmandu - Lukla - Phakding

The 40-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is one of the most beautiful air routes in the world. At Lukla you'll meet the rest of your support crew before setting off on the trail.

After an hour of gradual descent you'll arrive at Cheplung village for a glimpse of Mt. Khumbila, a sacred mountain which has never been climbed. From Cheplung, it's a further descent until Phakding, where you'll spend the first night.

Phakding - Namche Bazaar

The trail leads north through pine forests, across Dudh Koshi river towards Monjo, the entrance to Everest National Park. Crossing a suspension bridge you'll pass Jorsale village and walk alongside the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers. A steep ascent brings you into the heartland of the Sherpa: Namche Bazaar. If weather permits you may get your first sighting of Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse.

Acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar

You'll spend a day in the village of Namche Bazaar, allowing important time to acclimatise to the altitude. The village is the centre of the Khumbu region and your trek leader will help you get an inside look on traditional Sherpa life.

If you're feeling energetic you can hike to Sagarmatha National Park for a sunrise view of Mount Everest and other peaks, or make the day hike to Khumjung, a beautiful Sherpa village.

Namche Bazaar - Tengboche

You'll make the descent back to the Dudh Koshi river, before climbing through rhododendron forests to Tengboche. Along the way you'll be rewarded with constant views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kongde. At Tengboche you'll visit the monastery, the largest in the region, and marvel at the stunning views of Everest, Ama Dablam and others.

Tengboche - Dingboche

The trail continues through forests of birch, conifer and rhododendrons, interspersed with views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The route dips down to Devuche, crosses the Imja River to Pangboche, into the Imja Valley and finally up to Dingboche. This stretch of the route passes through a pastoral landscape with fields of barley, buckwheat and potatoes enclosed by stone walls.

Acclimatisation day in Dingboche

The beautiful village Dingboche is a popular stopping point for trekkers headed to Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam or Imja Tse. You'll spend a day here to further acclimatise with the option of day hikes to Nagarjun Hill or Chukkhung Valley.

Dingboche - Lobuche

The day starts with a gradual climb to Duglha, at the end of the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. From here, you'll climb a steep trail to Chupki Lhara, with its prayer flags and memorials to Scott Fischer, the American mountaineer, and the 10-time Everest sumitter, Babu Chiri Sherpa, who perished on their final ascent. You'll continue to the Khumbu Glacier moraine facing several great peaks: Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and Mahalangur Himal. The trail then eases off as you follow the valley to Lobuche where you'll spend the night.

Lobuche - Gorak Shep - Everest Base Camp

The trail to Everest Base Camp passes Gorak Shep Lake and memorials to Indian army mountaineers. The going is strenuous here due to the thin air and it's important to follow your lead Sherpa diligently. Crossing moraines and streams you'll finally reach the iconic camp, the bright colours of mountaineers' tents against the dramatic Himalayan backdrop. After reaching camp you'll descend back to Gorak Shep for a deserved rest.

There is the option to continue on to Kala Patthar in time for magical sunset views of Mt Everest.

Closing altitude: 5,170m/16,961ft (Everest Base Camp altitude: 5,364m/17,594ft)

Distance hiked: 13km, 6-7 hours

Gorak Shep - Kala Patthar - Pherice

If you didn't continue to Kala Patthar the previous day you will do so pre-dawn, for an up-close, panoramic view of Mt Everest. After plenty of time to take photos and selfies in front of the world's highest peak you'll return to Pherice for a good rest.

Closing altitude: 4,288m/14,070ft (Kala Patthar altitude: 5,545m/18,192ft)

Distance hiked: 16km, 7-8 hours

Pheriche - Namche Bazaar

You'll descend picturesque hillsides blanketed by rhododendrons and juniper trees, crossing the prayer-flag festooned bridge over Dudh Koshi river and through pine forests inhabited by pheasants and mountain goats The path eventually reaches Sansa, with views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Nuptse mountains. The trail finally winds its way back to Namche Bazaar where you'll overnight.

Distance hiked: 20km, 6-7 hours

Namche Bazaar - Lukla

The trail descends steeply, proving a challenge for tired legs, so progress will be slow and cautious. Crossing suspension bridges over the fast-flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries, the trail levels off and arrives at Lukla where you'll spend your final night on the trail, recounting memories of the last few weeks with your new trekking buddies.

Distance hiked: 19km, 6-7 hours

Catching an early-morning flight to Kathmandu, you'll have time to rest, eat and do some souvenir shopping. Your trek leader will remain on hand to help you see the city and do some sightseeing. That evening you'll enjoy one final meal with your group and crew to celebrate the successful completion of your journey – you've earned it!
