We really appreciated that this trek started a little later in the day, and we had the pleasure of the Vinikunka peak and walk back, nearly entirely to ourselves. What a privilege! This also speaks to an appreciation of the local challenges of overtourism, and their conscientious approach. William, our guide, was also extraordinarily patient with us, given that one of our group struggled with the altitude more than the rest. He was attentive and encouraging, while managing us in a quiet and confident manner. His knowledge and interest was apparent and we enjoyed his company very much. The Apus Peru team's communication was also excellent, and we appreciated the tailored offering they put together for us. We would highly recommend the company and tour to others!
Choquequirao Trek
4 day trek to Choquequirao
The Choquequirao trek is a great option if you're looking for a challenging Peru trek and something a little less mainstream than the Inca Trail.
Perched atop a ledge, high above the Apurimac river, Choquequirao – which means “Cradle of Gold” in Quechua – offers a fascinating glimpse into Inca history and is a superb, lesser-known counterweight to the world famous (and busy) Machu Picchu.
Known as Machu Picchu’s “sister city”, the Choquequirao ruins are even more intriguing given their remoteness. These Inca ruins are just as – or even more – impressive than Machu Picchu, and they are still only partially uncovered. And the best way to experience this magnificent site is by joining a Choquequirao trekking tour.
Customise this trek!
All Apus Peru treks are organised in private groups, which means the itinerary can be tweaked to suit your preferences. We also offer an in-depth five day Choquequirao trek, which gives you more time to explore the ruins, a Choquequirao to Machu Picchu trek, and an incredible nine day Choquequirao to Machu Picchu via Vilcabamba trek. This is a customisable trip
Use the following itinerary for inspiration. Remember: all days, hotels and activities can be altered to suit your requirements. A Apus Peru travel specialist will be happy to advise.
Day 1
Cusco - Capuliyoc - Chiquisca - Santa Rosa
Cusco

- Total Walking Distance: 12 km
- Total Walking Time: 6-7h
- Minimum Altitude: 1520m (4986 ft) / Maximum Altitude: 2970m (9744 ft)
- Altitude of camp: 2095m (6973 ft)
- Approx. night temperature: 8°C
The first day of the classic 4-day Choquequirao trek begins with an early pickup from your hotel and a drive to Capuliyoc, leaving Cusco behind. After about 1.5 hours, we stop at Tarawasi (2675m / 8776 ft), an Incan ceremonial site featuring an *usnu* (ritual structure). Tarawasi, meaning “house of the Tara tree,” is named for the versatile native tree whose pods are used for dye and medicine.
From Tarawasi, we drive another 3 hours to Capuliyoc (2970m / 9744 ft), where we meet our muleteers and take in stunning views of the Apurimac Valley and nearby peaks. A short 15-minute walk brings us to the Capuliyoc lookout point for lunch.
Refueled, we begin a steep 4-hour descent into the Apurimac Canyon, reaching Chiquisca (1950m / 6397 ft) with breathtaking drop-offs along the trail. After another hour of hiking, we arrive at the Apurimac River (1520m / 4986 ft) and start a challenging 2-hour climb to the Santa Rosa campsite (2095m / 6873 ft). This less-crowded camp allows for a peaceful evening under the stars.
Walking times and routes may vary based on group progress and the guide’s adjustments. Expect hot conditions (up to 35–40ºC / 95–104ºF) and biting insects—don’t forget repellent!
Day 2
Santa Rosa - Marampata - Choquequirao Ruins - Marampata
Choquequirao

- Total Walking Distance: 16.2 km
- Total Walking Time: 7-8h
- Minimum Altitude: 2095m (6873 ft) / Maximum Altitude: 3050m (10,007 ft)
- Altitude of camp: 2940m (9646 ft)
- Approx. night temperature: 5°C
Day 2 of our Choquequirao trek begins early with breakfast at 5:30 am and a 6:00 am start. We hike steeply for 3 hours to Marampata (2940m / 9646 ft), where we take a well-earned break. From there, it’s a gentler 2-hour trek with stunning first views of Choquequirao.
Upon arriving at the ruins (3050m / 10,007 ft), we enjoy a picnic lunch and a well-deserved rest before exploring the site. Only 30% of Choquequirao has been excavated, leaving much to the imagination. As we tour the religious sector and central ruins, we might even spot condors soaring above.
After approximately 3 hours exploring, we hike 2 hours back to the Marampata campsite. It’s a long but rewarding day designed to make the most of our time at Choquequirao.
Day 3
Marampata - Playa Rosalina - Chiquisca
Choquequirao

- Total Walking Distance: 8.9km (12.3km if camping at Cocamasana)
- Total Walking Time: 4-5h (6-7h if camping at Cocamasana)
- Minimum Altitude: 1520m (4986 ft) / Maximum Altitude: 2940m (9646 ft)
- Altitude of camp: 1950m (6397 ft) (or 2450m (8038 ft), if camping at Cocamasana)
- Approx. night temperature: 5°C
Today, we leave the scenic Marampata campsite and descend to the Apurimac River and Rosalina Beach (1520m / 4986 ft). From there, we hike uphill to our campsite at Chiquisca (1950m / 6397 ft).
For those with a strong pace or those continuing on the Machu Picchu Trek Extension, we may instead camp at Cocamasana (2450m / 8038 ft).
Day 4
Chiquisca - Capuliyoc - Cusco
Cusco

- Total Walking Distance: 7km (or 3.6km, if you camped at Cocamasana on D3)
- Total Walking Time: 3-4h (or 2h, if you camped at Cocamasana on D3)
- Minimum Altitude: 1950m (6397 ft) / Maximum Altitude: 2970m (9744 ft)
This morning, we wrap up our Choquequirao trek with a 3-4 hour climb to Capuliyoc, where spectacular views await. Our car will be waiting to begin the 4.5-hour drive back to Cusco.
On the way, we can visit Saywite (3500m / 11,483 ft), an Incan complex featuring intricate stone art and ritual spaces, or opt for a relaxing stop at the Cconoc hot springs (1780m / 5840 ft). The thermal baths, surrounded by carob trees and cacti, offer soothing waters (26°C–35°C) to rest our muscles. After a quick dip and a scenic lunch overlooking the Apurimac River valley, we continue to Cusco, arriving around 6 pm.

The trek around the Ausangate massive proved to be even better than expected. Apus has a very professional organisation which shows quality in all aspects. Sustainability and fair payment to its employees. We fully enjoyed the trek and was treated as king and queen by the guide Herbert, the chef Mauro and the two horsemen. Fantastic meals and even cake at the last breakfast !
Herbert could tell a lot of what we saw under ways and had allways an answer. Super flexible and constantly high spirits.

We had an amazing 5-day, 4-night Inca trail trek with Apus Peru and their guide Mario (and their porters). I’d give 10 stars if possible. They are great with kids (our son is 9), and truly were caring, knowledgeable, and provided the best experience possible. A++ in every way.
