Tasmanian Devil

An uninhabited island, Maria Island is reserved as a sanctuary for a number of endangered species, including the Tasmanian devil.

A number of species can also be spotted such as wombats, wallabies, kangaroos and pademelons and it is regarded as one of the best birdwatching spots in Tasmania, home to the Cape Barren goose.

The waters surrounding the island are also classed as a Marine Nature Reserve where seals and whales can be spotted.

The only permanent accommodation on the island is a converted convict prison, but there is camping available.
